-Fire Prevention Week takes place from October 6 to 12 with a theme of "Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire prevention".

-On Thursday, October 17, get ready to drop, cover and hold on! The Great ShakeOut BC earthquake drill will take place at 10:17 am.

-Also, beginning at 10:17 a.m. on October 17, a test alert of the City's emergency alert system, Voyent Alert!, will be sent out. Sign up today!

Nanaimo 150: Did you know?

City Hall officially opened in 1951 with Princess Elizabeth in attendance (she would become Queen of England six months later). This two-storey building was built in the International style and designed by prominent Nanaimo architect, Thomas B. McArravy, one of the pioneers of the use of modernism on Vancouver Island. There are many interesting nooks in City Hall, including an old vault containing many historical records including the minutes from first City Council meeting.
