PEOPLE MOVING PEOPLE: HARDCOVER BOOK

The VHA is delighted to inform you of our new book, published in partnership with Rapido Trains Inc. People Moving People: The History of VIA Rail Canada is a full-colour, lavishly illustrated, 288-page hardcover book on the history of Canada's national passenger railway.

Written by renowned Canadian railway historian Kevin J. Holland with a foreword by the Honourable David Collenette, this is a book on VIA like no other.

VIA book

I would like to call this a coffee table book but it is far more than that. It is a detailed history of the railway, its people and its infrastructure. The photos have been curated from VIA's own archives as well as the collections of numerous railfan photographers. Unlike most of the books published on VIA in the past, People Moving People does not just focus on VIA's early years, but takes the reader through the history of the railway from CN and CP right through to the new Siemens fleet trials.

People Moving People: The History of VIA Rail Canada is in stock and available now directly from the VIA Historical Association. Please click here to order your copy today. Please spread the word about this book.

Panorama Magazine

Speaking of publications, the first issue of Panorama, the VHA journal, has been available for some time. This inaugural edition includes an introduction to our organization and our equipment in English and French.

Everyone who donates $50 or more per year will receive each issue of Panorama as it is published. We are working on the second issue now and expect it to be released in the coming months.

You can easily set up a monthly donation. Please click here to visit our website and click on the "donate now" button. The VHA is entirely funded by your donations.

Get Involved in the VHA

The VHA is run entirely by volunteers. That's a strength - we're all passionate about VIA's history - but it's also a hindrance as we all have busy lives. Please get in touch if you can help!

We are looking for people to get involved with the VHA in the following ways:

  • Equipment restoration: if you have experience working on railway or automotive repair and/or restoration, then you have the skills we need to help Chris Fox, our Chief Mechanical Officer, work on our equipment. We're particularly looking at restoring/painting the ends of 6133 and rebuilding the interior of our sleeping car, Edmundston. Our equipment is stored at VIA's Toronto Maintenance Centre so you need to live in or near the Greater Toronto Area.
  • Social media management: we're looking for people with experience working with Facebook and Instagram pages who can help us manage our social media. Having a knowledge of VIA's history and/or access to historical VIA photos would obviously be a big help.
  • Website and social media content: if you have insight or stories of any aspect of VIA's history - its employees, its management, its equipment, or anything else - we would love for you to write these stories down for our website and/or our Facebook page. If you have any historic VIA photos, publications, or issues of VIAlogue that you can share, that would be great too. We're particularly interesting in hearing stories and seeing photos from VIA retirees.

And a Paid Position Too!

We're looking to hire a part-time administrator who can help us communicate with the public, take minutes at our meetings, keep track of donations, etc. This is a paid job and you can work from home. You need to be comfortable with the usual computer software, such as Office and Google Docs. Again, please get in touch if you can help!

Equipment Update

Chris Fox, Matt Boucher, John Carey and Brian Craus have spent several months working on the carlines in the roof of Edmundston. Four of these were heavily corroded and new ones needed to be fabricated. This is the seventh attempt to get the overall shape just right. The other three carlines should not take very long to complete. You can see one of the new carlines in the photo below. At the same time, Brian, Matt and Chris have been busy replacing all of Edmundston's windows.

6133 will be on display next month at the TRACCS Rail Day, so Chris has been working on our first RDC to perform some much-needed maintenance. We repaired the roof leak back in 2016 with a new product that was supposed to be permanent and - surprise! - it leaked again. So Chris used the tried-and-true method of asphalt pitch on the inside and membrane and tech screws on the outside. Chris is really hoping this is the end of the water.

Apart from other maintenance like charging the batteries and rebuilding the engine starters, Chris and his team have begun to tackle the interior. The bathroom of 6133 had been taken apart before we bought it, so Chris is making new plymetal walls and fabricating a new bathroom. Those of us who remember vintage VIA equipment will recognize the walnut-patterned MacTac that was used so much inside VIA's coaches and RDCs.

That's about all for now. Please remember to donate to keep our restoration efforts going. Click here to donate. A special thank you is owed to VIA enthusiast John Van Weeren, who has funded so much of our restoration work to date.

We'll be in touch when we have more news to share. Please share this newsletter widely using the "send to a friend" link below and please get in touch if you can help us.

All the best,

Jason
