| | Reminder to Drivers: Slow Down, Stay Alert, and Watch for Wildlife Collisions between vehicles and wildlife put both people and animals at risk. Being aware and driving cautiously can help reduce these incidents and keep everyone safer. Drivers are reminded to slow down, stay alert, and watch out for wildlife. Follow these tips and guidelines provided by our regional Conservation Officer Service (COS) Tips to prevent wildlife vehicle collisions: | | - Be extra cautious at dawn, dusk, and night, when animal activity peaks.
- Follow posted speed limits and scan the ditches for movement or for the reflection of eyes from your headlights.
- Slow down when you see an animal - some animals like deer freeze in panic, while moose may run along the road.
- Obey wildlife warning signs – they’re placed in high-risk areas based on real data.
- Never swerve suddenly to avoid an animal, as this can lead to a more serious collision - brake firmly and stay in your lane.
- Use high beams when possible to spot animals sooner.
When you see wildlife on the road: - Slow Down - collision avoidance and driver response times are improved at slower speeds.
- Anticipate unpredictable behaviour from all wildlife.
- Determine what the animal is doing and where it is going.
- Some animals travel in groups - where there is one animal, there may be more. Watch for doe/fawn or moose cow/calf pairs.
What to do after a wildlife collision or spotting roadkill: - Report human injuries, vehicle damage, or an animal carcass that presents a highway safety issue.
- Call the RCMP.
