AVIATION SAFETY CHRONICLE

ARE YOUR AERONAUTICAL MAPS AND PUBLICATIONS UP TO DATE?

Naturally, a subscription to the paper version will ensure that you have up-to-date documentation. But  more and more pilots are opting for  portable devices (EPD - electronic portable device) to carry out their flight planning and also for use in flight. But here too, you must maintain a subscription to maintain  access to this documentation which is up to date.

Foreflight is without question the leader in this area, at least as far as general aviation is concerned.

Unfortunately, Foreflight is only available on Apple platforms. But what about those who use Android?

There is a resource for Android users. It's  called Fl t Plan Go. The app is available on the Google Play Store. A version also exists on PC ( fltplan.com ). Fl t Plan Go is a product of Garmin and unlike Foreflight, the subscription is free - but with reduced functionality compared to Foreflight. This  platform  will still give you  access to publications that are up to date such as CFS, CAP and aeronautical charts . Use them for your safety.

A reminder that the use of Fl t Plan Go, like Foreflight, is authorized for VFR / IFR flights provided that its use meets the requirements of the CARs (602.08 and 602.60) and the Transport Canada Information Circular 700- 020 .

WE'RE BACK AT DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME

Hard to believe, but we're back to daylight saving time (Eastern Daylight Time). Well yes, in the night from Saturday to Sunday we advance our clocks.

And that also means that for the next few months, this is the number that you will need to use to get Universal Time (UTC) from your local time (Eastern time zone).

31st FLY-IN AT MO

Finally good weather!

There was no question that Maurice was playing the trick of last year and that he was unable to scratch the river with ice. The track and the parking areas had been ready for more than a week, but Mother Nature showed up on the Thursday before the RVA, giving us a wet and therefore heavy snowfall ... Never mind, Maurice worked tirelessly and everything was ready to receive the aircraft, whether on wheels or on skis. A huge congratulations to all its team of volunteers too!

Maurice was proud to announce that 50 aircraft had landed during the day. For my part, I normally try to estimate the moment when there are the most devices on the ground to try an aerial photo. But it was a waltz of a departure for two arrivals and two departures for an arrival which meant that the parking areas never filled up despite the traffic, however, worthy of a successful RVA.

For my part, I have difficulty doing "social" at Maurice because the "decor" is always pleasant and the devices varied. So more pictures of devices than people. I saw for the first time a motor glider with a single central wheel and small stabilizing wheels mounted under the wings, a Europa Classic, quite special to see on a frozen river.
