ToA Land Acknowledgement

Township of The Archipelago respectfully acknowledges that we are situated on traditional Anishinabek lands and the territory covered by the Huron-Robinson Treaty and Williams Treaty.

We are grateful for the opportunity to live and work here and we thank all the generations of people, in particular the Ojibway, Chippewa, Odawa, and Pottawatomi peoples, who have cared for these lands and waters for thousands of years.

We recognize and deeply appreciate their historic connections to this place. We also recognize the contributions of other First Nations, Metis, and Inuit peoples, in shaping and strengthening this community and country as a whole.

This recognition is part of our collective commitment to our ongoing learning and reconciliation in the Archipelago community.

Waste Management | Wet Organic Food Waste

TOWNSHIP SOLUTION

Waste Management

Waste management continues to change and evolve with provincial policy and the diminishing lifespan of our landfill site. For decades, many of you have identified a discomfort with mixing food waste with regular garbage, a lobbied the Township to manage food waste similar to larger municipalities.

At the recent Rural Ontario Municipal Association (ROMA) Conference, the provincial minister discussed the new complex blue box recyclable program. The Honourable Minister also highlighted that wet organic waste, and Industrial, Commercial and Institutional (IC&I) waste are the next strategic targets for elimination from landfill by end of term. That means we can anticipate that the practise of accepting food waste at our transfer stations will be eliminated by end of provincial government term.

As you know, it is cost prohibitive, and impractical for small municipalities to employ a green bin program similar to those of larger urban municipalities. Council and Staff are committed to introducing practical, cost-effective, and innovative solutions that serve our primary objectives:

  • Enable community to deal with food waste
  • Eliminate one-third of waste going to landfill
  • Extend the lifespan of Site 9
  • Reduce carbon emissions by dealing with waste at its source.

The Township is proactively moving forward with a program that makes available a countertop food waste processor with significant discounts to our community.

How to Manage Food Waste | Township Initiatives

The Archipelago is excited to announce the partnership with Food Cycle Science to subsidize the resident purchase price of FoodCycler food waste diversion products.

Residents wishing to purchase a unit must pay at the municipal office by cash, debit, or cheque, on a first come first serve basis, limited to one unit per residential kitchen.

The program is open to residents only, and pickup can take place when the payment is made.

Resident information will be collected, and residents will be asked to participate in a 12-week study to measure the total waste diversion. The Township Office is open Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 4:30pm and closed daily from 12:00pm to 1:00pm.

Managing Food Waste | Personal Perspective

Some members of Council have been utilizing FoodCycler for the past 6 months and in the case of Reeve Liverance for over 12 months.

Councillor Scott has utilized a unit for the past six (6) months with very positive results. It has reduced the amount of food waste in the Toronto Green Bin Programg by over ninety (90) per cent. Where a green bin was a third full every week, the output of food waste is now once every five (5) weeks or more. With a household of five, this is a significant reduction!

Tissue paper waste such as tissues, toiltet paper, and paper towels are a significant waste item for green bin programs (about 17% in TOA waste stream). Backyard compositing is the solution to reduce this wet, organic waste stream.

Foodcycler products are readily available from retailers at over $400 for the smaller model. The Township has negotiated very aggressive discounting for its community to stimulate the adoption of this technology.

The energy demands are very low for those who are off-grid. For gardeners, the processed, dehydrated waste can be mixed with earth to support your green thumb efforts.
