Dear midwifery community,

Welcome to the new academic year! A message from Mieke Koehoorn, Dean pro tem, Faculty of Medicine.

We’ve had a full and busy start to the term, and we are grateful to everyone who has stepped in to support our students as preceptors, especially those who have done so on short notice.

This year marks the fourth anniversary of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and the 12th anniversary of Orange Shirt Day. While important progress has been made, there is still much more work to be done. We encourage you to take the time to review the DFP JEDI Committee’s education and resources, which have been gathered to support our shared learning journey.

In the same theme of walking the path of reconciliation together, the Faculty of Medicine's Office of Respectful Environments, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (REDI) invites you to join UBC Medicine & The Australian National University: Walking the Path of Reconciliation Together on Tuesday, October 28, 2025 (12:00–3:00 pm PT).

This Indigenous Speakers Series session will bring leaders from UBC and ANU together to reflect on a landmark partnership, Memorandum of Understanding, advancing Indigenous medical education, health research, and reconciliation. πŸ‘‰ REGISTER HERE

The Birth Place Lab also shared an invitation on Instagram to learn from collaborator Dr. Wanda Phillips-Beck about her role in the RESPCCT study, where she discusses respectful allyship with Indigenous communities.

And with that, it’s officially fall, which means soup and sweater season. Time to get cozy and tune out the premature December holiday retail displays.

Warm regards,
