Our guest speaker was riveting! Dr. Angela Roberts, a leading researcher in aging and brain health at Western University, is the Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in Data Analytics and Digital Health in Cognitive Aging and Dementia. Her presentation on the SuperAging was fascinating.
We learned that living with purpose and having defined goals are defining characteristics of SuperAgers. Research on exceptional cognitive aging worldwide has shown that the quality of social connections and relationships is likely more crucial than the quantity of social events or the number of friends one has. The depth of connection and meaningfulness of relationships, especially in older age, seems to influence cognitive health. SuperAgers are teaching us that purpose, connection, and joy in later life play a critical role in ageing well.
