Orange Shirt Day and National Day of Truth and Reconciliation

On Sept. 30, we observe Orange Shirt Day and National Day of Truth and Reconciliation  to honour the children, families and communities affected by residential schools.

UBC Midwifery is committed to fostering understanding and respect for Indigenous birthing practices. Our role in reconciliation involves learning from Indigenous leaders and working towards a healthcare system that honours and uplifts their traditions.

Equity and Wellbeing Initiatives

Dr. Kellie Thiessen worked with two work-learn midwifery students (Azlina Tima and Joean Lu) this summer to develop a project proposal entitled Intersectional Equity: Scaling Wellbeing Initiatives for IBPOC Students. The project's focus is to adapt an existing framework from within UBC to guide and implement well-being initiatives that specifically support IBPOC students and then scale up for other students.

The students and Dr. Thiessen submitted the proposal to The Strategic Equity & Anti-Racism (StEAR) Enhancement Fund and were awarded 5K to support this work over the next six months.
