Return of Evacuated Parkland Integrated Health Centre Patients and Residents to Shellbrook

As the evacuation order for the RM of Shellbrook has now been lifted, the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) has commenced the process of returning patients and long-term care residents to the Parkland Integrated Health Centre in Shellbrook.

On Friday May 29, 2026, 53 patients and residents were pre-emptively evacuated due to wildfire risk in the area, and were transferred to facilities in Prince Albert, Melfort, Tisdale, Unity and Porcupine Plain. Patients, residents and families will be informed about their specific plans for repatriation to the Parkland Integrated Health Centre, with transfers occurring throughout the day today, and will be completed by Wednesday, June 3, 2026.

The Parkland Integrated Health Centre remained open for emergency and primary health services during the evacuation and is now reopened for acute inpatient care and long-term care.

β€œPatient safety will always be our top priority, and we would like to thank our patients, residents and their families for their understanding and patience during the evacuation,” said Derek Miller, Chief Operating Officer of the SHA. β€œWe are grateful to our staff and physicians for their collaboration and care throughout the evacuation process. Thankfully, the immediate risk presented to the community was avoided, and we are grateful for the efforts of our partners, including the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency in coordinating a robust response to wildfire risk in the area.”

As normal service delivery returns, the SHA would like to thank all the fire fighters for their hard work as well as the community and other partners for their ongoing support, including the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency, the Town and RM of Shellbrook, local SHA teams, Emergency Medical Services, and many others who were instrumental in supporting the safe and coordinated transfer of patients and residents.

SHA CARES - Living our Values

For Bradie Thoumsavanh, an Orthoptist at the Eye Care Centre at Saskatoon City Hospital, explaining what she does for work often comes with a few questions. Orthoptists work alongside Ophthalmologists to diagnose and treat disorders related to eye movement and how the eyes work together.

After 30 years as a paramedic, Derek Lamb found himself on the other side of a life-threatening emergency in 2024, waking in the middle of the night with crushing chest pain.

Thanks to a collaboration between Cardiology at Royal University Hospital and Medavie Health Services West, patients who call 911 with a suspected heart attack can now bypass the emergency department and get life-saving treatment faster.

 Recognition and Appreciation

This Pride Month, Saskatchewan Health Authority reaffirms what we believe every day. That safe, respectful, and compassionate care belongs to everyone. Every patient. Every family. Every member of our team.

June is ALS Awareness Month in Canada

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often called Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Over time, ALS leads to loss of muscle control, impacting movement, speech, swallowing, and eventually breathing. While there is currently no cure, research and community support continue to improve quality of life and offer hope.

Upcoming walks are taking place across the province to ensure the ALS Society of Saskatchewan can continue to provide support, services, equipment, advocacy and resources to individuals and families living with ALS.

Together, we can raise awareness, support those impacted, and move closer to a future without ALS.

Code of the Month: Code Silver

June’s Code of the Month highlights Code Silver: Active Assailant. Staff are reminded to take immediate actions to reduce risk, using Run, Hide, Fight principles as appropriate to the situation. Staying aware of your surroundings and acting quickly to remove yourself from danger are essential during these events. See the June Code of the Month poster for additional information.

If you have any questions, please contact the Health Emergency Management (HEM) team at SHA.HEM@saskhealthauthority.ca

eHR Viewer Access to patient-uploaded Health Care Directives (HCDs)

Providers and staff with access to the eHR Viewer can now view Health Care Directives (HCDs) uploaded by patients through MySaskHealthRecord (MSHR). Building awareness with the public will be the focus throughout the summer months.
Access to HCDs in the eHR Viewer enables provincewide sharing at any time and helps care teams deliver goal-concordant care. HCDs should inform shared decision-making conversations; patients with capacity can change or revoke directives at any time so confirming documents are current remains best practice.
