Crushing it: repurposing excavated rock to

create sustainable solutions at The Ottawa Hospital's new campus site

Did you know that excavation during construction can generate tens of thousands of metric tonnes of rock?

Excavated material is typically hauled offsite for processing before it’s returned to construction sites to be used to backfill. Learn how repurposing excavated material onsite allowed TOH to eliminate the need for thousands of heavy dump truck loads travelling to and from the site.

The Ottawa Hospital’s approach to sustainability is to think about the design of the new campus not just within the walls of the hospital. The landscape and existing climate of the entire campus are critical factors in creating a facility and site that promotes health and healing – for the individual and for the environment.
