What is Geometric Abstraction?

Geometric abstraction is a form of abstract art that uses geometric forms and spatial relationships as its primary visual language, creating meaning through abstraction rather than representation.

Through the interplay of line, shape, colour, pattern, structure, and form, artists investigate harmony, rhythm, movement, perception, and emotion.

Within Canadian art history, geometric abstraction has evolved as a dynamic and diverse tradition, continually expanding the expressive possibilities of non-representational art.

Sydney Blum

Mark your calendars! From August 1 to September 7, 2026, the Ice House Gallery at the Grace Arts Centre in Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia will be home to an exclusive solo exhibition by Sydney Blum.

This curated showcase brings together distinct chapters of Blum’s artistic journey. The gallery will primarily feature her "Chasing olo" series, a collection that anchors the emotional and visual weight of the show. Complementing these larger works are the intricate, small-scale sculptures of "Hungry For The Cosmos" which invite viewers to look closer at universal themes on a micro-scale. The exhibition may also include two rare pieces from her "Icarus-Colour-Space" project, rounding out a deeply immersive visual experience.

If you are in Tatamagouche this summer, look for the newly installed banner outside the Grace Arts Centre and step inside to explore the exhibit. For those unable to attend in person, we will be sharing exclusive installation photos in our next update.

Paul Bureau

CROSSINGS

In this period where the world seems to be entering a zone of constant turbulence, I have taken a step back to position myself towards a more refined form to encourage contemplation.

For several years, my works have been dominated by opulent accumulated oil paint. In this new series, the paintings are composed on linen canvas. A reduction in the use of oil paint is reserved for a more subtle sensitivity.

The linen canvas serves as a key source for the composition of the paintings. Color and form are transposed into vertical, horizontal, and diagonal bands to offer the sensation of being in motion. They evoke the feeling of being in motion and contribute to the art works staging which is likened to a theatrical performance.

These bands help convey the perception of opening and closing spaces, adding depth and a dynamic interplay to the visual experience. In this series, I allowed myself moments of pause for contemplation.

Each passage of color is more nuanced, and sometimes only a thread of color appears. Several variations of blue, contrasted with candy-like colors, create a lighter and more airy sensitivity. A dialogue in intervals and fragmentation is the result of this new series.

Carol Cooper

Carol has been a member of Definitely Superior Art Gallery (DefSup) in Thunder Bay, Ontario, for the past 20 years. She will be submitting two works from her recent Série Poly-géométriques: Simply Between Points, for display - shown below.

This year, the gallery is celebrating its 38th Anniversary and will be mounting a multidisciplinary Art Exhibition showcasing 115 artists. The Annual Members Show offers the opportunity for both emerging and established artists to share exhibition space. The lack of restriction is designed to encourage eclectic and experimental works in response. Presentation of the work facilitates those artists whose art investigates social, political, environmental, and critical issues of importance.

This summer, The Summerhouse Studio will host a special showcase of limited-edition artwear by Blaise DeLong Designs.

Located at 12 Front Street in the charming village of Rockport, Ontario the collection will be on display throughout July and August.

Visitors will also have the unique opportunity to meet the designer, as Blaise plans to drop in regularly to share the stories behind the wearable art pieces and connect with the community.

Brigitte Radecki: Fold Repeat

Location: Art Mûr, Montréal, (Quebec) Canada - Dates: September 2026

For Radecki, a resolutely feminist artist who came to maturity within postmodernism, painting, with wit, obstinacy and vigor, has been a primary practice for over forty years.Her work, produced in chronologically overlapping series, has been informed by literature (Radecki is an avid reader), life (as a German-born female living in Tiohtià:ke/Montreal), and a profound love of the immediacy and sensuality of Modernist painting (despite, or perhaps because of, its fall from favour during her formative years as an artist). The title of the exhibition, Fold Repeat, alerts us to the seemingly simple method that Radecki follows and provides a clue to the conceptual depth of the paintings that result.

Heidi Spector

Heidi Spector is a geometric artist best known for her exploration of minimalism as studied through lines, repetition, color and reflection. Spector’s work has been the subject of numerous solo and group shows including exhibitions in Montreal, London, Paris, Los Angeles, Houston, Miami, and New York. Her work is included in several corporate, private and museum collections worldwide.

Her paintings and sculptural cubes composed of acrylic painted as bands of color on Russian birch, are topped with resin, creating a surface where candy-like colors pulse and dance together, alluding to the impact of popular music on her work. Referred to by the artist as “geometric minimalism”, Spector purposefully avoids injecting specific emotional content to her paintings, instead opting for bold color choices that quickly establish an upbeat and lively mood.

Her shining repetitive pattern of vertical or horizontal stripes project a natural sense of optimism and joy informed by the techno beats and self-absorption of club life. Spector’s paintings are influenced by popular music, taking on titles based on song lyrics by artists as varied as Duke Ellington, Roxy Music, Amy Winehouse and DJ Tiesto.

The color palette of each painting is in part a response to each song, infusing her works with the sensation of being an audio/visual playlist. The geometric opticality and slick surfaces of Spector’s paintings connect her works with a tradition of hard–edge painters, such as Bridget Riley and Frank Stella. Her vision of the paintings as objects of desire and joy, however, also place Spector’s work alongside contemporary pop artists embracing kitsch as profound.
 

Gillian Turnham

Gillian will be travelling to Cairo, Egypt this summer to deliver a course in advanced Islamic Geometric pattern theory to students of The Jameel House of Traditional Arts.

JHTA offers a dedicated two year graduate program in Traditional Islamic Arts, focusing on the regional arts of Islamic Egypt.

Gillian’s core focus within Islamic geometric art is the architectural ornamentation of Mamluk and Ottoman Egypt and Syria. Therefore it is of tremendous significance to be invited to teach this course on Mamluk rosette patterns of Cairo in such a fitting location.

This program is run through the King’s Foundation School of Traditional Arts.
