How to reduce social media stress by leaning in instead of logging off

Young people’s mental health may depend on how they use social media rather than how much time they spend using it, according to a new study by UBC researchers.

The results showed that users who thoughtfully managed their online interactions saw mental health benefits—particularly in reducing symptoms of anxiety, depression and loneliness.

Adam Knight | Communication & Engagement Specialist | Health, Wellbeing & Benefits

I had an awful 2024. Some health challenges for my family back home in Australia, combined with some personal difficulties that felt like a lingering consequence of the pandemic, made life a little bit unbearable. I was stoically pushing through, as you do... But it was getting harder and harder to find joy in the things I enjoyed.

I needed help. And for someone whose job it is to promote wellbeing resources, I sure did take a long time to use them.

I eventually spoke with a counsellor and a life transition coach through our Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP). And while there wasn't any great revelation or solution to my problem, they were just two knowledgeable people who I could speak to and discharge some of my anxiety. By having a conversation out loud, instead of just with myself, I was able to interrogate ideas and difficulties that had been weighing on me and get feedback. Just talking had an effect, one that continues to this day.

Our EFAP is free for faculty and staff and their dependents. You will have different needs from mine, but perhaps the first step will be the same — reach out for help. There is very little to lose and a lot to gain.
