Let’s Imagine the Future of Knowlton’s Village Core

The Town of Brome Lake is launching a strategic reflection to help guide the future of its village core.

As part of the overhaul of its land use plan, this process aims to ensure the village evolves harmoniously, while respecting its unique identity, built heritage, and landscapes.

This initiative is unfolding in a dual context.

On the one hand, the vitality of the real estate market highlights the need to guide and manage future development. On the other hand, the renewal of our underground infrastructure represents a unique opportunity to rethink the design of the village’s public spaces.

Waste Sorting Bin Management: Simple Winter Solutions

We have noticed an increase in non-recyclable materials in blue bins this winter. We understand that, during the winter months, managing waste bins can be challenging! Here are some practical tips to help you sort your materials properly all winter long.

The Brown Bin (Organics)

Good news: winter is an ideal time for composting, as cold temperatures help eliminate odours! Here are a few tips to prevent materials from freezing at the bottom of your bin:

  • Line the bottom with newspaper, cardboard, egg cartons, or a large brown paper bag to absorb moisture
  • Alternate layers of organic waste with paper or cardboard
  • Avoid liquids (soups, juice, coffee)
  • Wrap wet food scraps in newspaper or a brown paper bag
  • Freeze your food scraps before placing them in the bin

The Black Bin (Garbage)

Reducing waste at the source is the most effective way to lighten your garbage. Here are a few simple actions you can take:

  • Refuse disposable and over-packaged products — choose reusable items instead (coffee mugs, cutlery, snack bags)
  • Buy in bulk
  • Choose durable products — sturdy and easy to repair
  • Reduce food waste — plan your meals, use leftovers, and bring surplus food to the community fridge
  • Bring your reusable containers and bags — when dining out and shopping

Use the ecocentre and electronic waste collection events to properly divert certain materials!

Contrary to popular belief, extending the time between garbage collections does not lead to sanitation issues. You can therefore safely place your waste in your garbage bin, even if the next collection is scheduled several weeks later.

Preparing Your Bins for Collection

Always close the lids and remove snow and ice before placing your bins at the curb! Rain, snow, and ice can accumulate in open bins, increasing their weight and processing costs, and may even damage them. A frozen lid will not open during collection, leaving your bin unemptied. In addition, water and snow contribute to materials freezing at the bottom of the bins, making them difficult to empty.

If materials are already frozen, gently loosen them with a shovel or place the bin in the sun or in the garage for a few hours before collection day.

The Right Bin for Every Material

  • Brown bin (organics): Food scraps, yard waste, and non-waxed, soiled paper and cardboard
  • Blue bin (recycling): Printed materials, containers, packaging — that’s it!(See our upcoming article for more details on recyclable materials.)
  • Black bin (garbage): Only items that cannot go in the compost, recycling, or to the ecocentre!

Not sure how to sort an item?

Residents are invited to consult the online tool Bin Impact, or download the Ça va où? app—two simple, practical references to help you sort properly.
