Register for spring and summer programs with Parks, Recreation and Culture begins March 12!

The City of Nanaimo, Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture is offering a wide variety of recreation, culture and parks programs for the upcoming spring and summer season. This includes swimming and skating lessons, summer daycamps and courses in art, music, cooking, dance, fitness, yoga, music and more. 2025 spring and summer lesuire guide. 

The recreation hours for Wednesday, March 12 are as follows:

  • Beban Park: 6 am-8 pm
  • Bowen Park: 6 am-4:30 pm
  • Nanaimo Aquatic Centre: 6 am-9 pm
  • Nanaimo Ice Centre: 6 am-6 pm
  • Oliver Woods Community Centre: 6 am-7 pm

Start ACTing!

Are you a new or existing group looking to inspire or advance climate action? The City of Nanaimo and the Regional District of Nanaimo are looking for new members to join ACT (ACTing for Climate Together) to be part of the solution with us.

This program provides groups an opportunity to meet with other groups taking on climate change, learn from each other and connect with City and RDN staff. Fun prizes are available and City of Nanaimo ACT participants will be eligible to apply for project funding through the Community Environmental Sustainability Project Grant.

Home Energy Navigator

Are you looking for support in undertaking energy improvements in your home? Would you like to access government and utility rebates and financing incentives? If so, sign up for the new Home Energy Navigator program.

The Home Energy Navigator program is now available for City of Nanaimo residents. This free program supports homeowners with upgrading their heating source and/or the home's overall energy efficiency through building envelope upgrades. It also provides direct one-on-one support throughout the home energy improvements, including accessing rebates.

Call for 2026 Street Banners will open late spring 2025

The City’s Street Banner program offers artists and designers an opportunity to submit proposals for original banner artwork that will be hung around Nanaimo. Banners will be on display in the Arts District downtown, along Bowen Road, Third Street and other major routes, creating a vibrant visual presence.

The 2025 City of Nanaimo street banners, designed by artist Aiym Samay-Sampson, reflect patterns of metamorphosis and change. Watch for them on display soon.

Will Your Commute Be Affected This Week?

Here’s a list of up-to-date information on City construction projects.

  • All businesses in the construction areas are open unless otherwise posted.
  • When approaching construction zones, please make sure to slow down, follow any detours that may be in place and obey all signage and traffic personnel instructions.
  • Remember that construction zone speed limits are 30 km/hr unless otherwise posted.
  • If you know your commute is taking you through any of the areas below, please allow for additional time and plan ahead.

  • The intersection of Wall Street and Comox Road is being updated with new traffic lights, pedestrian crossings and altered Wall Street right turn. Work takes place from Feb 24 to May 16 between 7 am and 6 pm, Monday to Friday. Expect traffic pattern changes including lane closures, and maximum accommodation of single-lane traffic each way. Bus stops 109974 and 110047 will be affected. Visit the RDN Transit page for more information on bus stops.

Midtown Gateway Project

  • Areas currently affected Bowen Road, between Northfield Road and Labieux Road, Boxwood Road, between Northfield Road and Tulsa Road and Northfield Road, between the Parkway and Bowen Road.
    • Night Work on March 13. No southbound traffic will be permitted onto Boxwood Road at the intersection of Northfield Road from 6pm on March 13 to 6am on March 14 (1 night). Please use detours as posted.
    • Right turns off Northfield Road (eastbound) onto Boxwood Road will not be permitted 24 hours per day until late March. Please follow posted detour using new roundabout on Boxwood Road.

Midtown Water Supply Project

  • Be aware the following trailways will have occasional construction activity:
    • between Labieux Road roundabout and the E&N Trail. 
    • between Third Street, VIU and the Black Diamond neighbourhood.
    • between Northfield Road and Griffiths Road alongside the Parkway.
  • All trail surfaces will remain gravel until the spring. Pavement restoration will occur when the paving plant reopens.

Townsite Area Utility Upgrades - Phase 1

  • Sections of Cadogan Street and St. Andrews Street will be closed for water upgrades and open to local traffic only. Single-lane alternating traffic will be in place on Millstone Avenue into March as water upgrades continue. Expect delays or use an alternate route.
