Back to Basics: Prep for university-level learning

Fuzzy on physics? Muddled about math? Worried about plagiarism? The peers and pros from the Student Learning Hub are reviewing core concepts in math, physics, chemistry, and writing to help prepare you for university-level learning. Attend peer-facilitated review sessions from September 6 to 23 to gain confidence in core concepts. In-person and virtual sessions include: 

  • Readiness for University Math
  • Foundations of Physics
  • Chemistry Essentials
  • Academic Reading and Writing
  • Academic Integrity and Plagiarism

Heat soccer and Pups at the Pitch

Rep the Heat by wearing blue and gold and head to Nonis Field for a fun weekend of women’s soccer and B.A.R.K. therapy dogs!

Friday, September 9 at 5 pm
Bring your dogs out to Pups at the Pitch at Nonis Field as the Heat women’s soccer squad take on the Saskatchewan Huskies. 

Saturday, September 10 at 3:30 pm
Cheer on the UBCO Heat women’s soccer team as they host the Regina Cougars. Join the B.A.R.K. therapy dogs to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the therapy dog program on campus.

Free fitness week: September 12 to 19

Group Fitness classes are free next week. Classes are limited and running on a first-come, first-served basis, so make sure to come early. Check in at the customer service desk in the Hangar Fitness Centre to receive your class pass. Check out our Group Fitness schedule to find your fit.

Intramural sports lottery registration

Intramural sports are a great way to keep active, make friends, and have fun! Several different sports and league options are available, ranging from competitive to just for fun. To ensure equitable registration processes for all participants, a lottery registration system has been implemented. Find out more and register yourself or your team for the lottery on September 12 and 13.

Disability Resource Centre open house

The Disability Resource Centre (DRC) is taking part in UBCO Alumni’s Weeks of Welcome by hosting an open house on Wednesday, September 14. Students, staff, faculty, and prospective members of the UBCO community are invited to stop by the DRC (UNC 215) between 9 am and 4 pm to take a tour, learn about the DRC’s resources, chat with an Accessibility Advisor, and enjoy some refreshments.

A conversation with Waubgeshig Rice

All students are welcome to join esteemed Anishinaabe author and journalist, Waubgeshig Rice, as he speaks at UBCO about growing up in Wasauksing First Nation and his journey to becoming an author. Inspired by his culture and community to pursue storytelling, Waubgeshig will share how cultural revitalization and Indigenous-focused learning led him to a career at CBC and to become a best-selling author, and how a similar path can inspire others to pursue their passions.

Happening Wednesday, September 21 at 6:30 pm, this event is free but registration is required.

For 10 years B.A.R.K. (Building Academic Retention through K9s) has been dedicated to fostering well-being on campus with therapy dogs. Throughout September we'll be celebrating this milestone with a variety of events and activities including a special drop-in session on September 9.

Become a volunteer first responder!

Passionate about first-aid and want to make the UBCO campus a safer place? Join the UBC Emergency First Response Team (EFRT)! We are a group of students from a variety of degrees and majors who volunteer as first responders. We work alongside Campus Security to provide 24/7 emergency medical aid on campus and support various campus events as first-aid personnel. We are currently recruiting new responders for the 2022/23 school year and we would love to answer any questions you have about our team.

UBCO students with disabilities Discord server

Created by students for students, the UBCO Students with Disabilities Discord Server aims to bring together disabled students at UBCO and establish a community that supports one another and encourages meaningful connections. Form friendships, discuss interests and passions, pursue disabled-led advocacy, and develop a collective to voice concerns within the UBCO community through the UBCO Students with Disabillities Discord Server. 

Please note: This is not a UBC-run service, it is a student-led initiative. As such, the group is not overseen, administrated, or accessed by UBC or UBC staff.

UBC Okanagan Library has partnered with Okanagan Regional Library to offer a StoryWalk® on campus. Walk the perimeter of The Commons Field behind Nechako to read the children’s book All Are Welcome by Alexandra Penfold. Pages of this book will be displayed until September 15.

Join the healthy masculinities conversation 

Join this 8-week program to meet new friends and engage in conversations about healthy masculinity, men’s mental health, and healthy relationships. This supportive, psychoeducation group values building connection, learning, and dialogue, with room for playing games! Open to all male-identified campus members.

Running on Mondays starting September 26 from 6:30 to 8 pm in Senior Collegium UNC 335. Free snacks provided!

Construction update for the new Interdisciplinary Collaboration Innovation building

Construction of the new Interdisciplinary Collaboration Innovation (ICI) building, south of the Engineering, Management, and Education (EME) building, is scheduled to begin in late September. This work will result in disruptions to the EME building, as well as sidewalk, lane, and/or full road closures along Alumni Avenue.
