120,000 Canadians hospitalized for COVID-19 last year

New data from the Canadian Institute for Health Information show that hospitalizations due to COVID-19 increased by 19 percent in 2022-2023, with over 120,000 visits recorded. At the same time, COVID-19-related emergency department visits decreased.

Increase in traffic injuries related to cannabis 

A new study by ICES found a spike in the increase of emergency department visits for traffic injuries involving cannabis following legalization in 2018. The study examined medical record data from emergency department visits for traffic injuries in Ontario between 2010 and 2021.

UM project receives award for excellence in equity

A new project, supported by HDRN Canada's IDEA Team Lead Dr. Amy Freier received the inaugural Robbins-Ollivier Award for Excellence in Equity. The project will examine systemic ableism across University of Manitoba and address barriers for people with disabilities.

New capacity-building platform on patient engagement

Unité de soutien SSA Québec has launched a new capacity-building platform featuring training courses on patient engagement and patient partnership in research. Synchronous and asynchronous courses are offered in French and English.

Saskatchewan life expectancy at lowest in 22 years

CBC interviewed Dr. Kim McGrail, HDRN Canada CEO, about the drop in life expectancy in Saskatchewan, attributed in part to deaths of young people from drug poisoning, and COVID-19-related deaths. The average life expectancy decreased by two years from 2019 to 2021.

Accessing health data on vaccines for research

HDRN Canada's role as a facilitator of health data sharing is featured in this CMAJ article on reducing barriers to accessing adminstrative data for vaccine research. It also cites our Privay Team's conclusion that most legislative structures support SARS-CoV-2 data sharing.
