Welcome Back BMS! đŸ‘‹ BMS World Wide Welcome Event đŸ˜Š

Event Dates: Aug. 24 - Aug. 27, 2020 

To welcome BMS students all back to the new school year, we’re excited to invite students to “BMS World Wide Welcome”, a student-run online welcome back celebration for Media Studies students to orient themselves back to school, in a new way!

The first “BMS World Wide Welcome” event is a chance for students to get to know each other, catch up after the summer break, create, and acquaint themselves with the program and connecting to a virtual UBC community. The events will familiarize BMS students with their year’s courses, professors, resources, artistic and community opportunities that can make for a rewarding time while studying remotely this school year.

BMS Media Art Fest Submissions
Deadline: Aug. 21, 2020  

As part of our BMS World Wide Welcome event, we are excited to be hosting a "UBC BMS Media Art Fest" at 7pm (PST) on August 24, that will be livestreamed on our Facebook and YouTube. ⁣

This one-hour live stream will feature work from all years across the BMS program and explore the theme of “searching”. As we navigate the tumultuous time together, this festival reveals concepts of memory, justice, and re-situating ourselves into a new context, through pieces of media art. This talk will discuss the environmental impacts of current “fast fashion” and textile production, and how the industry is shifting in the era of climate change. We will also give an overview of the wide range of natural materials used in textile manufacture, and a brief exploration of some research being done on alternative silk materials. THTR 308: Sound Design For Live and Virtual Media
Offered in 20W Term One 

This course teaches the fundamentals of sound design for all media. There will be an emphasis on the design of sound in collaboration with other designers, including interaction points with a director, actors, etc... Students can expect to learn and share knowledge of mixing, mic’ techniques, speakers, psycho-acoustics, digital audio workstations, performance software, and more.

DMED 500: Foundations of Digital Entertainment
Offered in 20W Term Two 

This  course explores the history and future of digital entertainment through technological, social, legal, ethical and business leadership lenses. Attention is focused on the economic history of innovation in the industry, the evolution of the experiences and technologies, and the social, legal, ethical and business leadership issues, which evolved as a result.

THTR 399E: Improv for Collaborative Projects
Offered in 20W Term Two 

This course is focused on increasing alignment with others when creating, designing, managing and collaborating on any project together, through the practice of specific improvised activities - cultivating an increased awareness of the spontaneous actions and interactions that occur when working on projects with others, exercising improv abilities during any creative pipeline, and reflecting on how these might improve the creative, collaborative, design and management of a project.
