WHAT WE HEARD! VIEW OUR COMMUNITY FEEDBACK REPORT ON TRANSPORTATION IN SQUAMISH

Thank you to everyone who participated in the first phase of the District’s new Transportation Master Plan project. We heard from more than 800 people who shared their transportation experiences, challenges, and ideas, to help create a balanced transportation system that meets the needs of our entire community. The warmer weather is here and the May long weekend has begun! The District is once again urging everyone to please do our part and recreate responsibly to take care of nature and keep it beautiful! Make sure these principles are part of your weekend plans this year:

With over 700 campsites in Squamish, visitors can find access to amenities including washroom facilities, and bearproof garbage facilities (please be aware of current campsite and road closures located in the SLRD).

CENTRAL ESTUARY RESTORATION PROJECT UPDATE

Squamish! We are happy to share the news from the Central Estuary Restoration Project team that their project is now complete and that construction equipment along the Squamish River Training Berm (Spit Road) is being removed.

As a reminder, this restoration project is led by a partnership between Skwxkwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation), Squamish River Watershed Society and Fisheries and Oceans Canada with funding from the Federal Coastal Restoration Fund. You can find more information on the project here.

The Training Berm (Spit Road) runs through the Wildlife Management Area which is jointly overseen by the Squamish Nation and the Province of BC.

RESIDENTS INVITED TO SUBMIT THEIR NOISE CONCERNS FOR THE SQUAMISH MUNICIPAL AIRPORT

The District of Squamish is developing a long-term Strategic Plan for the Squamish Municipal Airport – Don Patrick Field. The multi-phase process started in 2022. As part of this work, the District has created a Noise Concern submission form to enable residents to submit noise concerns to the District. This form will help identify areas impacted by noise as well as the frequency/time of day.

NEW ITEMS ACCEPTED FOR RECYCLING

At the beginning of 2023, several accepted items were added to our residential curbside recycling collection. The following materials and items can go in your blue bin:

  • Aluminum foil, thin metal tins, aluminum pie plates, aluminum baking dishes;
  • Plastic plant pots, plastic cups, and plastic food storage containers;
  • Plastic straws, plastic stir sticks, plastic utensils, plastic disposable hangers; or
  • Paper bags, paper gift boxes, paper party décor.

E-Bike Expo

Join us at Junction Park in Downtown Squamish to check out a variety of electric bikes, get information about purchasing and owning one, and have your questions answered!

When: Saturday, June 3 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Where: Junction Park.

 

Squamish Adventure Centre now open to the public

The Adventure Centre is now open to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Please note renovations remain underway in parts of the Centre and the public is asked to avoid work areas within and around the building. Thanks for your patience while this work is underway.

INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS

 

Judd Road watermain upgrade

Upgrades to the watermain along Judd Road between Cottonwood Road and Government Road, as well as a small section on Eagle Run Drive, will begin May 23.

Work will take place from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and is expected to be completed by mid-August.

Impacts:

  • Please expect delays and single-lane alternating traffic.
  • There will be no parking in the work zone during work hours.
  • To avoid delays, plan your route around the work area whenever possible.
  • Expect construction noise during working hours.

Thank you for your cooperation while we complete this important infrastructure upgrade.

Requests for a public meeting must be made within the first 21 calendar days of a project’s launch in the Development Review. If a combination of 10 separate website-based, emailed or written requests are received by the District, then the applicant will be required to hold a Public Information Meeting regarding their proposed development.

Class 4 Driver Course | 18y+

Beginning June 5

This course will allow participants to obtain an Unrestricted Class 4 Driver’s Licence, in order to safely drive our 14-passenger program van and the District of Squamish will reimburse all approved course and exam fees.

Author Talk with Ella Harvey: A Time of Light and Shadow

May 25, 7 – 8:30 p.m.

Join the library to hear Ella Harvey read from and talk about her new book A Time of Light and Shadow.

Ella Harvey’s adventurous spirit has taken her to remote regions of the world. She has lived on five continents and worked on four. Her second travel memoir A Time of Light and Shadow is published by Rocky Mountain Books. Ella is a retired nurse and now lives in Victoria.

Join Squamish CAN for the final event of their five-part “Gardening in Squamish” Series.

Drawing (Botany) Home: Finding Place with Field Journaling

June 8, 3 – 6 p.m.

Join artist, author and botanist Lyn Baldwin for a special hands-on-workshop celebrating the release of her illustrated book, Drawing Botany Home: A Rooted Life. Participants will use a series of drawing and writing exercises to create a visually captivating page-spread, as a first step in exploring how the practice of nature journaling can help weave a reciprocal relationship between people and place
