The BMS Welcomes Back Acting Program Chair Dr. Richard Arias-Hernandez

The BMS would like to officially welcome back Dr. Richard Arias Hernandez as the Acting Program Chair of the BMS.

Richard is Assistant Professor of Teaching at the School of Information. He has been teaching in the BMS since the program started in the areas of information visualization and social media. For the last three years, he has also co-led the BMS Program Renewal project. This is his second term as Acting Chair, while Associate Professor of Teaching Christine D'Onofrio is on sabbatical.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Christine D’Onofrio for her dedication and passion as the Program Chair over the last two years. She will still be involved in the BMS, as a Co-PI of the BMS Program Evaluation and Renewal (UPER) project. Following Richard’s one-year term as Acting Chair, Christine will return as BMS Program Chair in July 2022.

Dr. Richard Arias-Hernandez Receives SSHRC Partnership Grant as UBC co-applicant for Archives 4.0: Artificial Intelligence for Trust in Records and Archives project

A total of 58 new projects led by UBC researchers have been awarded funding of $13 million through the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council’s Partnership Grants, Partnership Development Grants and Insight Grants programs.

Among these awarded UBC-led projects, we’d like to congratulate our UBC Bachelor of Media Studies and UBC School of Information Assistant Professor of Teaching Dr. Richard Arias-Hernandez, who was co-applicant for the awarded Archives 4.0: Artificial Intelligence for Trust in Records and Archives project.

The project received the SSHRC Partnership Grant, which provides funding for four to seven years of advance research, research training and/or knowledge mobilizationin the social sciences and humanities through mutual co-operation and sharing of intellectual leadership.

Arrival/Return to UBC Campus Information & Resources

UBC is planning for a return to on-campus activity for the 2021/22 Winter Session. Courses will be primarily delivered in-person, with the expectation that students will attend on campus in September. The university is working hard with provincial health authorities to ensure the campus is safe for all students, staff, and faculty.

Queer Art Festival It's Not Easy Being Green

Queer Arts Festival shows artists upcycling & recycling apocalyptic fear & dread into art & social change.

Green symbolizes not only our relationship to each other & the lands we occupy, but also difference & marginalization, exemplified by popular culture.

QAF 2021 Dispersed: it’s not easy being green runs 3 weeks from your computer, our home base, the Sun Wah Centre in Vancouver’s historic Chinatown, and Vancouver’s only cemetery, Mountain View Cemetery.

Drawing in the Meadow: Workshop with Chrystal Sparrow and Holly Schmidt
Saturday, July 24 2021 1-3 PM

Join artists Chrystal Sparrow and Holly Schmidt for an afternoon of drawing in Fireweed Fields. Chrystal and Holly will guide a series of drawing experiences to deeply engage with the clover, plantain, buttercup and grasses in the meadow. Using materials such as oil pastels and charcoal, we will explore memory, emotion and kinship relations with plants to create expressive and unique drawings. No previous drawing experience is required.

This workshop is intended for adults and families with children ages 7 and up. The workshop is free, and all necessary materials will be provided for attendees.

Sanctuary: The Dakota Bear Ancient Forest Experience
Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday (Until September 26)

Enter MOA’s Haida House this summer for a 360° experience that takes you to the heart of a forest that has existed since the last Ice Age. Sanctuary offers both an immersive adventure and an ecological awakening.

Bike Tour: Exploring Black Public Art Around the City
Sunday, August 22nd 8:00am

Jump on your wheels and experience the magic of murals produced by Black artists across the city on a special bike route designed by Colour The Trails & BLM Vancouver and hosted digitally by BIKEnnale.

There will be multiple group riding slots throughout the day and an opportunity to learn about the history of the Strathcona neighbourhood while building community.

If you're interested in exploring what it means to "be human”, meeting new people, and are interested in helping out/gaining experience in running an online publication, check out the various positions available with Humankind.

I SPY... Call for Applicants
Deadline: Monday, July 26th 

I SPY… Call for Applicants 2021! I SPY… is a disposable camera mail art project created by UNIT/PITT.

Six selected participants will be mailed disposable cameras with return postage. Each individual will be given a unique crowd-sourced prompt that begins with: “I spy with my little lens…”

Nine photographs from each roll will be published to UNIT/PITT’s website and social media, and selected for consideration in a future exhibition.

Indigenous Filmmaker Fellowship 2021 - Whistler Film Festival
Deadline: Tuesday, August 31, 2021

The WFF Indigenous Filmmaker Fellowship (IFF) supports up to six Indigenous Canadian creators with short-form film concepts or web series in development and at the script stage. Content in all genres can be submitted for consideration.

This creative and business immersion experience takes place online over six months beginning in October with an online intensive course with workshops and meetings leading up to participation in the Whistler Film Festival and Content Summit in December 2021.

The program continues with three months of project mentorship and online workshop sessions until March 2022.

Ceramic Artist Residency
Deadline: Tuesday, August 31, 2021

The Port Moody Arts Centre’s Ceramic Artist in Residence (CAIR) program is commited to artistic and cultural development.

The annual residency supports the work of an emerging ceramic artist, providing opportunities for artistic development within an innovative and supportive ceramics community.

The resident receives a secure ceramic studio space for one year, gallery space for a solo exhibition, and mentorship. In return, they contribute to the PoMo Arts community by instructing classes, assisting in the operation of our Open Clay Studio, and engaging with the public.
