Birdwatching Kits Now Available

Bowen Island Library now has two birdwatching kits available for loan, as part of our ever-expanding “Library of Things.” Birdwatching (or “birding”) has become one of the fastest-growing, relaxing, and educational pastimes in North America for all ages, and we live in an ideal location to appreciate it.

Birdwatching supports STEAM learning (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math). The study of birds and their habitat can provide a deeper understanding of ecology, biodiversity, and the environment.

All you need is your Bowen Island Library card to check out a Birdwatching backpack kit! The current loan period for these kits is three weeks, with no renewals. You can place a hold through our online catalogue, or ask us to help.

Kits must be returned while we are open, and brought to the front desk.

What’s inside the backpack:

  • A pair of high-quality Vortex Crossfire binoculars with soft case and straps
  • The National Geographic Pocket Guide to the Birds of North America
  • British Columbia Birds: A Folding Pocket Guide to Familiar Species

Printing with Email-to-print

There are now two ways to print at the library:

Email-to-print

  1. Email your document to guest.print@bowenlibrary.ca
  2. Come to the library circulation desk where staff will release your document for printing.

Please note: You may attach one or more documents per email; however, we are only able to print one copy of each document per email. If you are in need of multiple copies, you may use our photocopier to make copies. Alternately, you may attach the same document multiple times in your email. If you have a complicated print job, you may prefer our second option:

Public Internet Computer with Printer

To print items yourself, you are welcome to use our public internet computer with black and white printer. Drop in, call, or email us to book a time.

More about our printing service:

  • 20 cents per page
  • black & white
  • 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper

You Asked About... Take-home Kits

In our fall 2020 survey, many of our library patrons liked the idea of take-home kits. We've since been building kits for patrons to check out very soon.

As mentioned above, we now have Birdwatching kits for patrons to enjoy.

In our growing "Library of Things," we also have Sphero Robotics Kits and Telescope Astronomy Kits in the works, for checking out in the near future. Check our website and e-Newsletter in the next while for more information on these.
