NEWS & UPDATES

Free job matching services available

The Job Development team at WorkBC Midtown works non-stop to connect with employers to get your foot in the door!

How It Works: Our custom job matching tool, built on the Salesforce platform, helps to quickly determine employers and jobs that WorkBC has connections with and matches you with them.

We network with employers so your application goes directly to hiring managers without having to compete with hundreds of other people to get your resume noticed (or worse, getting screened out by a computerized system!). Ask your Employment Specialist about this quick and easy way to get to the interview stage.

News: Increased access to EI and recovery benefits

Excerpt: "The Government will be transitioning to a simplified Employment Insurance (EI) program, effective September 27, 2020, to provide income support to those who remain unable to work and are eligible, and introducing a new suite of temporary and taxable recovery benefits to further support workers.

While the Government prepares for this transition, and to ensure support continues for Canadians whose employment has been impacted by the pandemic, the CERB will be extended by an additional four weeks, providing a new maximum of up to 28 weeks of benefits."

SUCCESS STORY

Sebastien's story: "This is the start for me of a new and exciting career in teaching"

I had been looking for a job for about one month and was looking to work in the field of education. The biggest challenge I faced with accessing jobs was that I did not have the necessary qualifications. For example, certificates that would allow work in childcare services or certificates for being a teacher in elementary school.

I decided to come to WorkBC [Midtown West] because I could get some help that would allow me to move forward in my projects, and to have answers to my questions regarding the steps to follow and the options that might be available to me. I also knew that the services offered would allow me to better prepare for job interviews and to make an attractive CV.

Thanks to [having] a strong case manager who listened to my aspirations, I was able to move forward step by step, eventually obtaining a teaching certificate in BC. To achieve this, I did workshops, which allowed me to better assess my personal and professional aptitudes. I took a course, which allowed me to work in a daycare service. I applied for training in order to be financially supported and complete the Bachelor of Education degree at the University of British Columbia.

Before I even finished my program to become an elementary school teacher, I got a job with the Conseil Scolaire Francophone. I was very happy because it meant that my efforts had paid off, so this is the start for me on a new and exciting career in teaching."
