What is Hyperphagia?

Bears are entering a very important time of the year as this is the last opportunity to pack on the pounds before the colder seasons. During the fall, they enter a state called hyperphagia, where they can eat thousands of calories but never feel full. This hyper-focus on food will make them especially active, prone to surprise, and protective over food sources.

Please remember the following to ensure the safety of people and wildlife:

  • Please make sure they are left to fatten up on natural food and NOT our garbage, fruit trees, or other attractants.
  • Please be extra alert and aware when recreating – make sure you give bears plenty of warning that you are near!

Wildlife reports help inform signage and education efforts in our community. Please call the RAPP line with any sightings or encounters at 1 (877)952-7277.

Experiential Workshop: A Village Around Every Family

September is dedicated to Truth and Reconciliation, a time to learn, reflect, and honour Survivors of Residential Schools leading up to National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Wednesday, September 30.

District of Squamish and Squamish Public Library are thrilled to welcome Kathi Hemphill Camilleri to deliver the following Experiential Workshop: A Village Around Every Family. Kathi is Cree and Métis, and she brings kindness, humour, and wisdom to create a safe and transformative experience for her audience. Her work focuses on cultural safety and competency, conflict resolution, and collaboration.

This workshop experience will assist you as you move forward in your reconciliation journey. We will deepen our understanding about decolonization in our community and learn about how we can increase cultural safety for those with Indigenous ancestry. From this learning comes an increased understanding of respectful ways of engaging and working collaboratively to build more culturally safe systems. The participants will have a cognitive and emotional understanding of traditional First Nations values. This learning echoes the sentiments and goals of the TRC Calls to Action and The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).

All are encouraged and welcome to join → Reserve your spot today!
