Patient Experience Week, April 29 – May 3, provides us with a reminder to think about patient goal-setting, which was identified as a key improvement opportunity in the 2022 provincial patient experience survey. At the BC Kidney Days conference last fall, BC Renal patient partner Paul Watson spoke about what patient goal-setting means to him. You can watch the recording here, which also includes health professionals who were part of the panel session. We hope Paul’s story will inspire and encourage other patients to think about what’s important to them and share their goals with their health-care team. See the Self Management section of the BC Renal website for more information and resources. | | National Advance Care Planning Day | Additional Resources BC Renal has a new Integrative Palliative Nephrology Resource Guide for health professionals. See our related Palliative Care web page for this and additional tools and resources covering End-of-Life Framework, Serious Illness Conversation Guides, Advance Care Planning and more. From the new guide: “A palliative approach with ongoing discussions is essential for comprehensive care of individuals to ensure CKD care addresses what is important to them to enhance their quality of life. Individuals who have these conversations with their clinicians about their values, goals, and wishes are more likely to receive the care they want, feel less distress and report better quality of life.” | Highlighting BC Renal planetary health | For Earth Day 2024, BC Renal is highlighting a few new and ongoing initiatives and resources aimed at reducing waste and improving the health of the planet while continuing to ensure the best possible care for British Columbians living with kidney disease. These include a newly published BC research abstract, “Nephrology Nurses: Essential Professionals in Sustainable Kidney Care,” an Apr. 26 webinar by BC Renal’s medical lead in planetary health, step-by-step guides for renal programs from CASCADES, and a waste management Learning Hub course for Lower Mainland clinical staff, and more. We’re committed to using its four strategic priorities as a touchstone for all we do, while also weaving in the three foundational principles that underpin our plan. (See graphic for priorities and principles.) As you may recall, in 2022-23, we worked with our BC Renal network partners, including provincial committee members, health authority renal program leadership and patient and family partners, to develop this plan. Going forward, all BC Renal provincial committees are asked to take on only one project at a time (with timelines varying from one year to multiple depending on scope) and to ensure their project aligns with at least one priority. In the months ahead, we’ll be meeting with all committee chairs, vice chairs and project managers to discuss opportunities to embed the foundational principles into their projects - a relatively new concept that we are co-creating together. | | Have you had a chance to read our recent stories featuring BC Renal executive director Dr. Adeera Levin, and medical lead, planetary health, Dr. Caroline Stigant?
