District Clarifies Latest Offer to CUPE 2269

Amidst ongoing, escalating job action by CUPE Local 2269 representing approximately 250 District of Squamish employees that began October 2, the District is working to address the two main Union issues - affordability and work/life balance. The two sides have been to the table twice since October 1, and each side presented a new proposal.

Postponed special events due to ongoing job action:

Recreation and Culture:​​​​​​​

The following programs will be offered for free (or donation to the Squamish Food Bank appreciated):

  • Saturday, October 11 Public skate 
  • Sunday, October 12 Family and Public skates 
  • Sunday, October 12 Little Sneakers
  • Monday, October 13 Parent and Child Hockey and Public Skate

The pool will reopen on October 18 with the following reduced hours due to staff shortages unrelated to job action (subject to change):

  • Sunday and Monday: Closed
  • Tuesday to Friday: 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Saturday: 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Swimming lessons will be offered at a reduced capacity due to staff shortages.

Swim lessons will be limited to one lesson set per child.

Fall aquatics programs will be viewable online beginning October 15; program registration will begin October 21 at 8 a.m.

District of Squamish Holiday Hours

Municipal Hall will be closed on Monday, October 13 for the Thanksgiving holiday.

ShakeOut BC

Get ready to ‘Drop, Cover and Hold On’ Thursday, October 17 at 10:17 a.m. for the world's largest earthquake drill! Register for the Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill here.

Please note part of the ShakeOut BC exercise will involve a test of the Squamish Alert emergency notification system that will send a TEST emergency message from the District of Squamish to subscribed residents. Visit squamish.ca/alert to create or update your account.

Tote Exchange and Selection

Are you interested in a larger or smaller garbage tote? The deadline to request to change your garbage tote size for 2026 is October 31. Solid Waste Utility fees will vary based on the garbage tote size you choose. A $50 exchange fee will apply.

Please note, no new large garbage totes are being distributed. If you select large, you will receive one small tote and one medium tote. If you have questions, please email the Sustainability Department.

Traffic Calming Program and Submission Form

The District of Squamish Transportation Engineering team has launched a Traffic Calming webpage on the District website.

The webpage provides information on the District’s Traffic Calming Policy and a dedicated form for resident-led submissions for traffic concerns they observe in their local streets and neighbourhoods.

The team will use these submissions to investigate the concern and prioritize projects; the top 3-5 projects will be costed and an implementation schedule will be determined based on budget availability.

Do you own property in Downtown Squamish assessed as Class 6 under the Assessment Act?

District of Squamish Business Improvement Area Bylaw No. 2799, 2021, will expire on March 31, 2026.  A new bylaw is required to renew the business improvement area.

Seeking Advisory Design Panel Members at Large

Applications are being accepted from those interested in volunteering on the District of Squamish Advisory Design Panel. The Panel reviews and provides advice regarding development permit applications and any other matter referred for review by Council. Applicants should complete an application form and submit with their resume.

Deadline: 4:30 pm on October 24, 2025.

Curbside Battery Recycling Week: November 3-7

Take advantage of this earth-friendly program to recycle your batteries responsibly and help keep harmful chemicals out of the landfill.

To prepare your batteries for collection follow these simple steps:

  • Place acceptable batteries into clear, sealable plastic bags.
  • On your regular collection day, place the sealed battery bags on top of your recycling tote.
  • NEW! Cell phones, tablets, laptops, and video games will also be collected – please put e-waste items in a separate bag next to your batteries.

Battery collection will take place on your regular garbage and organics collection day that week. To learn more, please visit squamish.ca/battery-recycling


Watermain Flushing

Watermain flushing began Monday, October 6, throughout Squamish to remove stagnant water and unwanted buildup within the pipes.

There will be no interruptions to water however during flushing, there may be brief periods when the water becomes cloudy, discoloured or have a mild chlorine taste, however the water remains safe to drink. If you experience either of these, please flush your taps by running the water until it becomes clear. Pooling of water in certain areas may also occur.

Low-level Flying Continues

Talon Helicopters will continue performing low-level flying over the region for LiDAR surveys until October 23. Work is taking place during daylight hours as per special authorization issued by Transport Canada. There will be no activity on the ground related to this flight.

  • Installation work on the watermain near Bill’s Place has shifted focus towards Highlands Way South.
  • Sanitary lift station rehabilitation on Pia Road continues.
  • Watermain upgrade on Birken Road continues.
  • Construction of a new chlorine injections chamber near Powerhouse Springs is underway.
  • Xwu’nekw Park Sea Dike upgrades continue.
  • The Garibaldi Cemetery expansion upgrades are ongoing.
  • Installation of a new transit shelter on Discovery Way is underway.

  • Work on the Victoria Street Active Transportation Upgrades continues on Victoria Street, between Cleveland Avenue and Loggers Lane.

  • Queens Way at Resolution Way
  • Queens Way between Commercial Way and Pioneer Way

 

Holiday Hours

Brennan Park Recreation Centre will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on holiday Monday, October 13. Here are a few activities to note: Parent and Child Hockey (online registration recommended) will be available from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. There will also be Public Skating from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. Please note, The 55 Activity Centre will be closed.

Seeking Library Board Members

The Library Board has the responsibility for oversight of the delivery of public library services in the District of Squamish. The Board consists of one member of Council and eight members of the public appointed by Council. Members of the Board will serve without remuneration.

An information package and application forms are available at the Library and online here. Applications should be received no later than 4:30 pm on October 15, 2025.
