Access in the News

A new public resource, Transparency Spotlight, can be found under the 'Research and Resources' section of the website. This is a searchable table of over 6,500 news stories informed through access to informationm (ATI) requests to be built upon going forward.

BC PIPA Supplementary Submission

BC's Special Committee to Review the Personal Informaiton Protection Act extended their work last year. Building off last year's submission, and building on Bill C-11 considerations, we again worked with the BCCLA to submit an update.

Federal ATIA Submission

With the Treasury Board Secretariat holding public consultations on access to informaiton, we made a focused submission on FIPA's priorities.

BC Provincial Engagement

The Ministry of Citizens’ Services launched an online survey on access to government information and the protection of privacy. FIPA helped increase awareness and encouraged people to participate.

Journalists win in court

Prior to our AGM, and on the same day that Justice Thompson released his ruling on Injunction-Zone Access, Brent Jolly presented the Canadian Association of Journalists' views on how the profession is responding to the threats facing transparency and government accountability.


 

On the horrizon

Special Committee to Review the Freedom of Information and Privacy Protection Act

The end of the last BC legislative session saw the Special Committee reconstituted and begin its work anew. Our research and consultaion is underway as we advocate for progressive law reform.

Interprovincal Comparisonof Personal Information Protection Act & Freedom of Information and Privacy Protection Act

Our legal research is informed from repeatable interjurisdicational scans and analysis identifying the gap between the current and potential best practise. We've been developing a tool set to make these comparisons faster and are close to publishing the raw comparisons.

Ontario White Paper Submission

Our repeatable research means we are more readily able to review and compare documents as opportunities arise. With Ontario undertaking public consultation to modernize privacy in their province, our researcher, Evan Brander, was able to draft a FIPA submission.

Right to Know Week

FIPA is preparing a variety of material to be available during Right to Know Week. Some of our planned activities include  participation in the Public Service Information Community Connection event. 

 

Comissioners online presenation

FIPA is pleased to let you know that we will be hosting Commissioner Michael McEvoy from the BC Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner (OIPC) for our annual presentation focusing on the current privacy and access climate in this province. It will again be online. Our event registartion will be sent to you shortly.
