Snuneymuxw First Nation and the Government of BC announced on July 15, the return of 2.67 hectares of land - part of the historic sxwayxum village site, also known as Millstone River Village – to Snuneymuxw. The land located on 1 Terminal Ave, part of the Sarlequun Snuneymuxw Treaty of 1854, was jointly purchased by Snuneymuxw and the Province. Mayor Krog was in attendance for this historic announcement.

"The rejuvenation of a crucial site in Nanaimo's downtown marks a significant milestone for Snuneymuxw First Nation. The return of ancestral lands is a long-awaited step toward rectifying past injustices, revitalizes the current derelict area and reaffirms an enduring connection to this land, ensuring that Snuneymuxw’s presence and heritage remain for generations to come." â€“ Mayor Leonard Krog

Nanaimo 150: Did You Know?

Nanaimo Fire Rescue has a rich history dating back to 1878 when it was established as the Black Diamond Engine Company and the first engine was purchased from the City of Portland. At that time, it was a volunteer fire department and they were housed in the original fire station located on Wharf Street. After that station was destroyed by a fire that started in the Royal Hotel, a new fire station was built in 1893 on Nicol Street (pictured above on the right) where it still stands today and houses a restaurant and other businesses.

It wasn't until 1913 when the first motorized fire truck was purchased. Before then, they used two horses, named Tom and Jerry (picture above on the right), to pull the ladder and truck. Tom and Jerry retired when the motorized fire trucks came into use. Nanaimo Fire Rescue still has one of the original fire trucks, Shakey (pictured above on the left), and it is stored in Fire Station 1.
