June 2021 

June is a month of celebration. Celebration of another school year completed, and celebration of our 2021 Graduates! I want to first congratulate all UBCO students who are graduating this year. Your hard work and dedication to your education are to be celebrated!

As the weather gets nicer and the lakes get warmer, I hope you enjoy the outdoors at a local lake. My family has been enjoying biking on Pelmewash Parkway in Lake Country. We enjoy the beauty of the lake, the fresh air, and connecting with nature. I hope you have an opportunity to enjoy some time in nature reflecting on the beauty around you.

UBCO Recreation is planning some great activities to keep you active over the summer. Make sure to check out our summer fitness classes being offered in-person and virtually including our new Staff & Faculty strength classes and Sweat & Flow. If you are looking for other recreation activities to try, check out the DIY Wood Sign Paining night, our Virtual Run with Rec, or paddleboard and golf lessons. So many ways to get outside and be active!

National Health and Fitness Day

Virtual Events & Programs


GoByBike week is back! Whether you are riding to work, for fun, or as a break between zoom meetings, ride your bike and log your rides for FREE to be eligible to win an awesome prize.

Canadian Collegiate Esports League

This new launch is a competitive video gaming league in partnership with Canadian Universities. This exciting new league will kick off with a Rocket League Tournament on May 29th followed by a second competition taking place in June.

Virtual Fitness Classes

Bring a Friend to Fitness - Invite your friends to fitness classes between June 7th to 21st for a chance to win a $50 gift card to Okanagan Lifestyle! Each time you bring a friend counts as one entry into the prize draw!

Sweat & Flow - an hour class of 30-mins HIIT and 30-mins yoga is offered again on June 13th and 27th at 10:00 am.

Run with Rachel - 10km Training Plan 

Rachel Garret, UBCO Heat Cross Country Alumni is running a virtual 5-week long 10km training program! Included in the program is an initial meeting, support throughout the month, as well as training & recovery tips! The goal is to have you safely completing a 10km run at the end of the program! Test your speed with Run with Rec the week of June 28th - July 4th. 

Dates: May 31st - June 28th

Virtual Run/Walk with Rec!

Join UBCO Recreation for a virtual run or walk of 3km, 5km, 10km, 21km, or 42km! 

Tag us on Instagram @ubco_recreation or email to receive a completion certificate and be entered to win great prizes! Also, help us grow our running community by joining our Strava Club!

The dates to complete this race are May 30 - June 5th &

June 28 - July 4th


Physical Activity Mentorship Program (PAMP)

This is a free 6-week program designed for those who would like to improve their mental and physical health or those who are new to physical activity.

A physical activity mentor will lead group sessions and will individually check in with each participant weekly to guide them through their physical activity journey. A referral into this program is required.

Date: July 15th - August 20th or July 16th - August 19th 
Location: Virtual or in-person options available 

Registration deadline is July 9th

Heat Summer Camps 

Led by a team of nationally recognized coaches and student-athletes, Heat Basketball, and Volleyball camps are a great way to improve skills or learn a new sport. 

Running in July and August, these camps will focus on teaching youths aged 9 to 18 fundamental sport skills in an exciting, game-like learning environment. Athletes of all skill levels welcome.

Dates: July 12th to August 27th
Time: 9am-12pm or 1-4pm
Location: UBCO Gymnasium

Golf Lessons

Golf lessons have been so popular we've added an additional session this June! Register before it sells out! Group lessons are a great way to learn all aspects of the game with your friends in a fun and relaxing atmosphere. 

$79 for students; $99 for staff/faculty *includes four, 1-hour sessions on Monday nights

Paddleboarding Lessons

Get out on the lake this summer with Okanagan Paddle Centre! They are offering 3 paddleboarding lessons for $65 ($45 for students). Try a new activity or enhance your skills in paddleboarding! 

Date: July 11-25 & August 8-22
Time: 1 - 2:30 pm

UBC Learning Circle - Indigenous Sports

UBC Learning Circle is hosting a speakers series in partnership with the First Nations Health Authority (FNHA), Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity & Recreation Council (ISPARC), and the BC Sports Hall of Fame.

There are four sessions that will be held in June (which coincides with National Indigenous History Month) every Thursday from 10-11:30 am.
