The VMQG puts on a biennial Showcase that celebrates our members’ work and educates the public about our guild and the modern quilting movement. The last Showcase was in August, 2022 and we’ve begun thinking about our upcoming Showcase in 2024.

A successful quilt show is a huge undertaking and requires many people to share the load. Our Showcase can only happen if all guild members are willing to help. The first step in planning is to gather information on how we might approach our next Showcase, for example, show size, time of year, venue and member interest. We welcome all comments and suggestions.

Please take a moment to complete our brief  survey
Survey closes September 20.

Thanks for your help.

October Block Lotto

Things in The Garden

Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) dates back to the 18th century and is a great technique for creating blocks that make precise shapes or simplified pictures of things, like a flower.

Many patterns are available online either free or for a small fee. Some are very detailed requiring many pieces while other simpler patterns have just a few pieces. This month we are leaving it up to you to choose an appropriate pattern for our ‘Things in The Garden’ theme. In the link below, you'll find links to some free patterns, some require that you subscribe to their newsletter, others are pdfs you can download directly to your computer.

FPP involves placing your fabrics under the paper and sewing on top of the paper. This can be confusing at first. If you are a beginner, choose a simple pattern and follow the ‘how to do FPP’ video by Connecting Threads. It's very methodical and has good visuals.

You can use foundation paper sold in stores or online, or just use regular printer paper and a short stitch. The commercial foundation paper is strong yet easy to tear away after sewing.

Choice of FPP block is up to you—flowers, butterflies—anything you find in a garden. Colour and fabric (solids and/or prints) are up to you, look to any garden for inspiration đŸ™‚đŸŒ»đŸ. Size of blocks are also up to you, the winner can assemble the blocks with infill pieces. For reference, the Bee block is 9-inches square, however you can print block patterns out at smaller or larger sizes.

Call for Circuit Training presenters

Do you have a quilting tip you'd love to share? It can be a shortcut, an embellishment, or a strategy you use in your quilting. Let your workshop coordinator know. At our October meeting we will have another round of Circuit Training.

Each presenter will have a 15 minute window to offer up their knowledge. A demo should be included, and a hands-on experience is nice if possible.

If you can’t make October’s meeting, would you let your name stand for another time? Circuit Training is a popular meeting activity, so we will be repeating it.

Contact Linda at workshops@vancouvermodernquiltguild.ca to volunteer.

Sew Good Quilts đŸ’•

After dropping off two quilts with the Unitarian Church for their refugee program, we took a break over the summer. Thanks to all who have donated time and/or fabric. We’ve got a few tops and backs made. With Hillary’s donation of batting and Laura Gates’ offer to longarm, we’ll have four quilts ready to gift before too long.

What’s next? Let’s create a team that can work together to identify recipients, sort donations, design, piece, quilt, bind and label.

Please let Megan know if you’re interested in being a part of Sew Good Quilts. president@vancouvermodernquiltguild.ca

Thanks again for fabric donations. We are not taking any more at this time.
