National Day for Truth and Reconciliation | BC Renal continues commitment to Indigenous health and wellness  On Tuesday, September 30, BC Renal will honour the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation — a day to reflect upon the history of colonialism on Turtle Island (North and Central America), to uplift Indigenous voices, and to reaffirm our commitment to Indigenous health and wellness.
| | Exemplifying our commitment, Indigenous Wellness is one of BC Renal's foundational principles from our 2023-2028 strategic action plan. Over the past year, our senior director of strategic initiatives, education and development, Gloria Freeborn, and our quality lead of patient-centred performance improvement, Helen Chiu, met with each BC Renal provincial committee to discuss actively integrating Indigenous wellness into their workplans along with the two other foundational principles. This year, BC Renal’s executive director, Dr. Adeera Levin, was one of two members to receive a Distinguished Achievement Award in the category of Overall Excellence - Senior Faculty. As this year’s recipient of the Leadership & Advocacy Award, Dr. Paul Anthony Keown has been honoured for his transformative contributions, particularly in the fields of immunology, transplantation, and precision medicine. Care Clinics 
Now available on the BC Renal website, this guideline covers the role of Kidney Care Clinics (KCCs) in addressing depression and anxiety in patients, including adults, children and youth. As a multi-page document, it covers risk factors, screening tools, treatments options, recommendations, and resources. It also provides a step-by-step flow chart for the KCC team, including when to connect with a patient’s primary care provider. See: Depression and Anxiety: The Role of Kidney Care Clinics. Thank you to members of the BC Renal provincial Kidney Care Committee for their contributions to this guideline! | | Disconnecting patients from HD machines during evacuations Now available on the BC Renal website, this emergency preparedness guideline provides information for health professionals for both precautionary and crisis evacuations. The two-page document includes a step-by-step table with helpful photos and explanations of what to do differently for a crisis evacuation. Red font is used for easy identification of steps during a crisis. See Disconnecting patients from their HD machines during an evacuation Thank you to members of the BC Renal provincial Hemodialysis Committee for their contributions to this resource! | | Emergency Hemodialysis Nurses Travel to Kamloops | Provincially trained nurses deployed to maintain service continuity Nurses of the provincial Hemodialysis Emergency Support Team (HEST) were sent to Kamloops this summer to help provide life-sustaining treatment at the Royal Inland Hospital Dialysis Unit. There, they contributed to stabilizing operations, maintaining service continuity and preventing patient displacements or hospitalizations. A total of nine HEST nurses from around the province took turns providing support, along with one local team member. Shown here are four of them along with Royal Inland hemodialysis staff. With the deployment wrapping up on September 1, we would like to extend a big thank you to the team! BC Renal’s updated 10-year snapshot of chronic kidney disease patients is now available. The July 2015 - July 2025 table provides new and historical data on the number of registered patients in BC by type (predialysis, hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and home hemodialysis). | | These insights, generated by BC Renal’s PROMIS information system, help inform planning and resource allocation to better meet the needs of kidney patients across the province. Included in the stats are actual numbers, average increase per year, and 10-year increase.
