Feature Story

Spread Quality Improvement (SQI) Program,

Advance Care Planning (ACP) Project

What is Spreading Quality Improvement?

The Spread Quality Improvement (SQI) program, funded by the Specialist Services Committee (SSC), is a provincial initiative designed to spread successful quality improvement projects across British Columbia. By supporting projects initially funded by SSC or the Shared Care Committee (SCC), the SQI program connects teams across sites and disciplines and fosters collaboration, shared learnings and effective practices, creating system impact.

Advancing ACP Through the SQI Program

“Improving how we talk about and document Advance Care Planning directly impacts the quality of care we provide.”Dr. Janine Davies, Medical Oncologist, BC Cancer Vancouver

One of the initiatives currently supported through SQI is the Advance Care Planning (ACP) project, which focuses on increasing goals of care conversations across multiple BC Cancer regional centres and the documentation of them in ACP PowerForms in CST Cerner. This work builds on several years of PHSA efforts to integrate ACP into routine care, ensuring that patient values, goals, and preferences guide care decisions. ACP has been further emphasized in BC Cancer’s 10-Year Action Plan, which highlights person-centred, coordinated, and compassionate care as a core priority.

Part of this foundational work began with a qualitative research project led by BC Cancer Nurse Specialist Heather Kilgour as part of her Master’s in Nursing degree. The findings helped establish the BC Cancer ACP Nursing Working Group, which mobilized this research into practical guidance and training for nurses across the province.

Read more about the work done by the BCC ACP Nursing Working Group to mobilize knowledge gained through this research here.

Stay Tuned

Check back in our January newsletter to learn more about other Quality Programs, such as the Physician Quality Improvement (PQI) Program, the foundation that made this meaningful work possible.

You can also expect more updates at the next MSES & MDSA All-Staff Meeting, where Dr. Michael McKenzie will present progress and next steps. Additional Lunch & Learn sessions will be offered across regional centres to support continued learning.

Thank you to the PHSA Physician Quality Improvement Program Team and Heather Kilgour for collaborating on this feature.
