Safety capsule: What to do if you lose your visual references in VFR flight?
Sophie Dufresne, class I flight instructor

You are flying quietly near the coast of Gaspésie on a sunny early morning when suddenly, a mist comes out of nowhere and coats you. You have just lost your visual references with the ground and are entering instrument meteorological conditions. This scenario could have a thousand variations: deteriorating weather, falling ceilings or sudden and unexpected showers. The result is the same: you no longer see outside and if you don't do something quickly, you have less than 3 minutes to live.

TSB report A21O0085: Loss of control and collision with terrain

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) has released its investigation report (A21O0085) into the loss of control and collision with terrain that occurred in September 2021 at Sundridge/South River Airpark, Ontario.

On September 16, 2021 at 3:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, a privately registered Mooney M20J aircraft with one pilot and one passenger on board landed on runway 30 at Sundridge South River Airport in Ontario. During the landing, the aircraft bounced several times and a go-around was performed. The aircraft then crashed in the forest approximately 1300 feet from the departure end of the runway. Both occupants were fatally injured and the aircraft was destroyed.

Training - Video on demand, an exclusivity offered by Aviateurs.Québec

The pandemic has led us to diversify our service offer by using the Zoom application for our training component. Armed with this experience, we have taken the scope of our virtual training program even further by adapting the AVPBOX video-on-demand platform to Transport Canada requirements. With the help of our partners Viglob and AVPBOX, an interface between these two platforms has been developed. We have thus succeeded in having our on-demand viewing process approved for the purpose of updating knowledge (RAC 401.05).

Today, we're taking it to the next level by offering you a new portal to access our online video training program. This bonus had two objectives: you facilitate access to our video library, and provide you with a file of your online training, which file would be accessible via your member profile.

As mentioned earlier, our online training process is approved by Transport Canada. Thus, some videos can be used for knowledge update purposes (RAC 401.05). By consulting the video library, you will easily find those which are thus approved.

How to get there ? Easy !

  1. By going to the home page of the Aviateurs.Québec website
  2. By clicking on the quick link Training – Video on demand
  3. That's it, you will then have access to our online training video library

Accompanying flight: a way to counter fuel costs

Our support program is also an opportunity to encourage the next generation, to offer coaching and to experience the pleasure of flying.

Do you often fly alone? So why not offer your empty seat to a young pilot who will be able to gain additional experience in addition to his training or to another experienced pilot?

It is important to ensure the next generation and this program aims to make itself known to young people. Also, do you feel out of your comfort zone for certain types of flights? You've never flown to the United States, you've never been to Toronto; it's been a long time since you've flown in a remote area; so, why not ask for an accompaniment using this application? Or quite simply for the pleasure of being accompanied or for the pleasure of flying on a different type of plane than yours.

The majority of pilots fly alone so why not share your empty seat.

In addition, this application will allow pilots to meet for small impromptu meetings. For example, one beautiful Saturday morning you decide to go to lunch at an airport, you just have to use this application to make an appointment with other interested pilots. The advantage of Facebook is that it is an instant means of communication… if you have subscribed to alerts of course.

The terms of the program are very simple:

- You subscribe to the Facebook group since it is a private group reserved for those who want to drive.

- You subscribe to alerts in order to be automatically informed of offers and requests.

- When you want to offer a seat, you just have to add an event.

- The pilot-in-command must have a valid license from Transport Canada, that his plane complies with the regulations (certificate of airworthiness, insurance) and that the flight is made in accordance withSection 401.28 of the Canadian Aviation Regulations .

This program is not intended as a substitute for any authorized flight instruction program.

Nilgaut aerodrome: Starlink connection is functional

A first wifi test was carried out at the Nilgaut aerodrome at the end of last week via the Starlink system. Everything works wonderfully. You can therefore contact the emergency services if necessary and/or a loved one.

One more step completed on the eve of the RVA Aérobrousse scheduled for the weekend of July 29. To keep you informed on the latest news on this RVA, consult the Facebook page of the group Les amis de l'aérodrome Nilgaut .

Pilot's guide - Navigating with the regulations

To help pilots navigate not only safely, but also in peace with the regulations, we have decided to update our Pilots Guide which dates back to 2013.

We saw fit to adapt it to today's reality with a few new elements and examples of case law. Although the issues with seaplanes are still present, the Guide is intended for all pilots and is intended as an overview of the regulations and laws that guide our passion.

Members in good standing can obtain the digital version for free by going to the Documentation Center on our website.   Note that you must log in to your member profile to access it.

The guide is also published in hard copy.

  • Dimensions: 15cm x 20cm
  • Spiral binding
  • Covers (front and back) are laminated to protect the document.

To get your copy, visit our online store .

  • Members: $5
  • Non-members: $25

We hope this guide can help you better understand your rights, privileges and responsibilities.

On the subject of photo resolution… most “smart” phones take photos in acceptable resolution and even “high” resolution. But often, the email software used is set to send only low resolution previews. This can be corrected by the user… You can also go through a manipulation by copying the photo and pasting it into the message. It is also possible to use WeTransfer, MailDrop from Apple, Google Drive in Gmail or OneDrive from Microsoft.

THE IMPORTANT is:

  • Give a TITLE to the photo
  • Give the full NAME of the PHOTOGRAPHER
  • Give YOUR full NAME
  • Give your member NUMBER (IN RULE).

For the rest, we will consider that you have read and accepted the rules when you participate...
