March is Nutrition Month!

March is Nutrition Month in Canada. Schools play a role in helping students develop healthy relationships with food and supporting families to nurture healthy eating habits. Nutrition month is a great time to explore, grow, cook, and get your school excited about food!

The Great Big Crunch

Celebrate food and show your support for a national school food program by participating in the Great Big Crunch. Here are some ways to get involved:

Food neutral approach to healthy eating

Hastings Prince Edward Public Health supports a food neutral approach to healthy eating. We encourage schools to teach and talk about nutrition in a positive way and create hands-on opportunities to learn about and experience food.

For more information on using a food neutral approach to meet Ontario K-12 curriculum expectations, email the Healthy Schools Team at healthyschools@hpeph.ca or visit Dietitians 4 Teachers.

Building healthy eating habits

Healthy eating is more than the food we eat. It includes where, when, why, and how we eat. Support students in developing healthy behaviours around food and eating using the healthy eating habits in Canada’s food guide as a foundation.

Try some of these activity ideas to support healthy eating habits:

  • Be mindful when eating:
    • Have a class discussion about mindful eating.
    • Lead students through a mindful eating exercise.
    • Ask students to describe the experience of eating a recent meal or snack.
  • Enjoy your food:
    • Discuss the sensory properties of foods students like and what they enjoy about them.
    • Examine how taste, culture, budget, and lifestyle influence food choices.
    • Have students share their favourite food or meal experience.
  • Cook more often:
    • Plan a cooking activity with your class.
    • Talk with students about what they like to cook at home and why.
    • Discuss the importance of food and kitchen safety.
  • Eat with others:
    • Eat together as a group to create meaningful conversations and connections.
    • Build social skills with conversations starters at nutrition breaks.
    • Ask students to describe or draw who they like to eat with and why.
