Bowen Island Public Library's e-Newsletter • June 2024 | Poet Talk: John Givins Sunday, June 2 | 1 pm Join us for the launch of local poet John Givins’ first book of poetry, Blowing Up Growing Up (2024, Askance Publishing), from which he’ll be reading selected poems. John Givins was led to scribbling poetic thoughts while navigating the traumas of his wife’s cancer treatments. The collection has a mix of many subjects and observations: love and whimsy, neighbourhood perspectives, travel experiences and autobiographical memories of family and friends. An accessibility shuttle will be available for folks in need of assistance to the picnic area. SRC includes a 50-day reading challenge where kids track their reading for 50 days to win a medal at the end of the summer! | | Songwriting Workshop with Sarah Jane Scouten Sunday, July 14 | 12-2 pm Space is limited • Registration required Join Bowen-raised Sarah Jane Scouten for a free songwriting workshop! She’ll share her long-honed knowledge of crafting songs, earning her four Canadian Folk Music Award nominations. All levels of songwriter welcome, whether you’re new to songwriting or have written songs before. Song-Share 2-3 pm After the workshop, from 2-3pm, we’ll host an optional drop-in song-share for those who’d like to stay and share their original song ideas with others. | | Final Book Donation Day Sunday, June 9 | 10 am-12 pm This is the volunteers' final book donation day until September. Donations of clean, good condition used books can be brought to the Bowen Island Library Annex starting at 10:00 am, going until volunteers' bins are full (no later than 12:00 pm). The volunteers are especially looking for novels and children's books at this time, but other types will be considered. A Friends of the Library volunteer will pre-screen your donations while you wait and will accept those that meet donation guidelines. | | French Connections Saturday, June 8 | 10:30 am Drop in and join us to practice your conversational French, and get to know other French language learners on Bowen Island! The focus is on beginner and intermediate speakers, but all levels are welcome. We meet 10:30-11:30 am, but participants are welcome to stay longer if the conversation is still rolling!
