The SBN’s Building Biotech Expo is the leading networking event with the best and the brightest of the BC Biotech and Life Sciences industry. This year, we've pivoted our flagship event virtually to align with Global Biotechnology Week. This annual event continues to attract and unite 100+ students every year, along with professionals from the life sciences, pharmaceutical and clinical sectors among many others. We’ve also had the pleasure of hosting several prominent organizations as exhibitors. The result is a gathering of students and professionals, eager to share ideas and forge a strong biotech community that will help shape BC’s biotech future.

Why attend Building Biotech?

Meet with movers and shakers of some of the hottest areas in the global and local biotech sphere. If you are interested in building your network of like-minded peers and industry professionals in the life sciences and biotech area, then you should join us at our Annual Building Biotech Expo this Friday, October 1st 2021 for this exclusive opportunity.

The full day event will include:

  • Keynote speakers from the Discovery Foundation and the Society for Canadian Women in Science and Technology (SCWIST)
  • Formal networking with students from different backgrounds and industry mentors.
  • A chance to virtually visit exhibitors and leaders in BC’s life science and biotech industry during the reception.

The UBC Affiliated Fellowships doctoral competition runs in concert with the university-adjudicated Tri-Agency Canada Graduate Scholarships-Doctoral (CGS-D) competition. Students who submit an NSERC, SSHRC, or CIHR doctoral award application are eligible for “unrestricted” Affiliated Fellowships and do not need to submit a separate Affiliated Fellowships application. To mark the 25th and 40th anniversaries of the SBN and SCWIST, we have partnered with the Discovery Foundation to launch a new Business Mentorship Program. This is a 1-week intensive program running from September 27th - October 1st 2021. Schedule is available on our website.

Aligned with Global Biotechnology Week, the Discovery Foundation’s Business Mentorship Program aims to support the next generation of Biotechnology Entrepreneurs, especially those from historically underrepresented communities (BIPOC, Women, LGBTQIAS+, and more) in navigating the Biotechnology industry.
Why be a Mentee?
  • Understand the process of establishing a start-up company in the Biotechnology Industry from incorporating a business, developing a business strategy to IPO’s or acquisitions
  • Develop a business plan and business model under the guidance of a mentor
  • Develop an understanding of start-up company fundraising, how to conduct market assessments, and determining company valuation
  • Gain a basic understanding of intellectual property and licensing
  • Develop an understanding of the role racial and gender inequality plays in the workplace and the actionable items we can take towards mitigating bias
The program aims to foster relationships between individuals and professionals through networking and mentorship, providing education and training through workshops and seminars, and providing 1:1 consultation with industry leaders. Participants will be paired with mentors throughout the week and have the opportunity to participate in a pitch competition which will provide a cash award and in-kind prizes to the top three participants to kick-start their Biotechnology venture.

This program is limited to 10 participants. Selected applicants will be contacted via email within 2 weeks of the application deadline.
Applications will close on September 03rd. Click here to go directly to the application form.
