New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers Conference

Hosted by the Governor of Massachusetts, M. Charles Baker, the 2016 Conference of New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers took place in Boston on August 28-29, 2016. It was the 40th such gathering since the Conference was created in 1973.

Québec Premier Philippe Couillard joined the New England Governors and his colleagues from Eastern Canada to discuss crossborder collaboration. Special panels on emerging and innovative energy technologies and on the benefits and importance of diverse energy generation highlighted how regional collaboration can pave the way towards a cleaner, cheaper and more reliable energy future for the region. Programme of the 2016 Conference.

This annual Conference ponctuates the work done throughout the year by NEG/ECP committees on issues such as trade, economic development, energy, climate change, transportation, environment, agriculture.

Governors and Premiers adopted 3 resolutions:

Resolution 40-1 - Resolution concerning the 40th Conference of New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers

Resolution 40-2 - Resolution recognizing the Importance of Continued Cooperation in Regional Economic Development and Trade Efforts

Resolution 40-3 - Resolution on Ecological Connectivity, Adaptation to Climate Change, and Biodiversity Conservation

In his opening address, Premier Couillard underlined the interdependence between New England and Québec and advocated for open economies, noting that the Québec-New England trade equals 12 Billion USD, with more than 32,000 New England workers being employed by Canadian companies.

" New England and Québec have always been allies linked by a deep sense of mutual confidence. During this visit, I reiterated the importance to continuing building up this strong relation and to widen our partnership efforts. It is in this way that we can remain competitive in the new global economy, strengthen our social policies, and allow our youth to realize their dreams, and fight against terrorism.

As I have often said, what menaces prosperity and the creation of jobs, whether in Québec, Canada, in different American States or in Europe, is not the opening of economies, but the closing of economies."

Québec Premier, M. Philippe Couillard
