Wildlife Update: Defensive black bear encounter in the Loggers East neighbourhood

The Conservation Officer Service and the District of Squamish are advising the public to be aware and take precautions following recent bear activity in the Loggers East Neighbourhood. A black bear sow with two yearlings has been active in the vicinity of Cardinal Drive, Loggers Lane, and the BMX park area.

Residents are advised to:

Secure all wildlife attractants to help reduce bear encounters and public safety risks.

If possible, store garbage and compost totes in a garage or shed, or ensure they are securely latched if kept outdoors.

Keep bird feeders out of reach.

Clean and secure barbecues.

Trail users along Loggers Lane are advised to:

Stay alert.

Make your presence known by making noise (e.g., clapping or calling out).

Keep dogs on leash.

Give wildlife plenty of space.

With spring time upon us, bears are starting to be more active and are out of hibernation. To report wildlife sightings or encounters, call the Conservation Officer Service Hotline at 1-877-952-7277 (RAPP). For more tips, visit WildSafeBC.com.

Watermain Flushing

Annual Watermain Flushing began April 8 throughout Squamish. During flushing, there may be brief periods when the water becomes cloudy, discoloured or have a mild chlorine taste, however the water remains safe to drink. If you experience these, please flush your taps by running water until clear.

  • Reduce negative human-wildlife interactions by locking and storing attractant totes in an enclosure.
  • Service times can vary from week-to-week. On your service day ensure totes are kept out and unlocked on time; leave one metre of clearance around each tote for truck access.
