Mén̓mens ta smánit: Community Celebration and Blessing

Mén̓mens ta smánit Childcare Centre, located at Valleycliffe Elementary, officially opened its doors to families this summer, offering 36 new full-time licensed childcare spaces for the community. Last week, we gathered for a special community blessing and celebration to mark the opening. The ceremony was led with care and cultural teachings by Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Councillor Joyce Williams, Speaker Is’gh’li-ya Anthony Joseph, Kwekwin Kwelhaynexw Linda Williams, Jennifer Nahanee, Charlene Williams, Kylie Deborah August, Roxy Lewis, and Randall Lewis.

The name Mén̓mens ta smánit, bestowed by the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation), reflects the nearby mountain, Siy’ám’ Smánit (The Stawamus Chief). It carries deep cultural meaning, symbolizing that the Mén̓mens (children) are under its care. Learn more about the partnerships that made this centre possible and how the project came to life in this short video.

October/November is budget time!  Follow along with Council's discussions about the draft 2026-2035 Financial Plan and weigh in while important decisions are considered.

What we are working to solve:

How can we continue to manage future growth, upgrade our infrastructure, and create complete neighbourhoods that meet our community needs, all while ensuring that tax increases to residents and businesses are manageable?

We hope you will consider attending one, some, or all of the in-person engagement opportunities. We've got Coffee with Council, Budget Bingo, our first ever trivia night (with Shane Fry), an Information Night (including a panel discussion with Council Members), and a Mayor's Drop-in.
