Let's Chat in English!

Saturday, May 18 | 10:30 am

A Drop-In Conversation Club for English Learners

Come meet with other English language learners at the Library and practice your conversational English. This one-hour session is led by a volunteer with experience teaching English. Join us on any of these dates: Saturdays, May 18, June 1, 15, 29. Free, drop in.

Poet Talk: John Givins

Saturday, June 2 | 1 pm

Join us for the launch of local poet John Givins’ first book of poetry, Blowing Up Growing Up (2024, Askance Publishing), from which he’ll be reading selected poems.

John Givins was led to scribbling poetic thoughts while navigating the traumas of his wife’s cancer treatments. The collection has a mix of many subjects and observations: love and whimsy, neighbourhood perspectives, travel experiences and autobiographical memories of family and friends.

Meet at the market to decorate yourself and/or your ride (bike/scooter/stroller/walker)to show your pride down the Multi-Use-Path.

After the 12PM boat leaves, we’ll stride and ride from BICS down the MUP, to the Library, and over to the BowFest Field. An accessibility shuttle will be available for folks in need of assistance to the picnic area.

Bring your own picnic and something to share with friends! We’ll eat, drink, and be merry together as we meet new folks!

Songwriting Workshop with Sarah Jane Scouten

Sunday, July 14 | 12-2 pm

Space is limited • Registration required

Join Bowen-raised Sarah Jane Scouten for a free songwriting workshop! She’ll share her long-honed knowledge of crafting songs, earning her four Canadian Folk Music Award nominations.

All levels of songwriter welcome, whether you’re new to songwriting or have written songs before.

Song-Share 2-3 pm

After the workshop, from 2-3pm, we’ll host a drop-in song-share for those who’d like to stay and share their original song ideas with others.

Presented by the Bowen Island Literacy Task Group and the Bowen Island Public Library.

Thursdays, April 25-May 30 | 11:30 am

Babytime is a free, 30-minute drop-in program of songs, books, and rhymes for babies 0-18 months and their caregivers! Starts at 11:30 am. Drop in and join us when you can.

At 12 pm, stay for a casual baby & caregiver social hour in the Annex.

Come pick up some great reads for all ages at the Mini Book Store, curated and organized by Friends of the Bowen Island Library Society volunteers, with all funds raised supporting the Bowen Library.

The Mini Book Store is located in the Library's main (south) entrance foyer.

Storytime

Wednesdays, April 10-June 5 | 10:30 am

A free, 30-minute drop-in program of stories and songs for 2-4 year-olds and their caregivers!

Afterwards, from 11:00-11:30 am, families are welcome to stay and socialize in the cozy Annex, read books, and hang out!

Book Donation Days

Sundays, May 19 & June 9 | 10 am-12 pm

Donations of clean, good condition used books can be brought to the Bowen Island Library Annex starting at 10:00 am, going until volunteers' bins are full (no later than 12:00 pm).

The volunteers are especially looking for novels and children's books at this time, but other types will be considered.

A Friends of the Library volunteer will pre-screen your donations while you wait and will accept those that meet donation guidelines. Donors will need to take back any items that do not meet the guidelines.

We thank everyone who donates books in support of the Bowen Library!

French Connections

Saturdays, May 11 & 25 | 10:30 am

Drop in and join us to practice your conversational French, and get to know other French language learners on Bowen Island! The focus is on beginner and intermediate speakers, but all levels are welcome.

We meet 10:30-11:30 am, but participants are welcome to stay longer if the conversation is still rolling!

Drop in to meet with Janice, a WorkBC Career Advisor, in the Library Flex Room, and get one-on-one help with resumes, cover letters, interviewing, job searches, insights on the job market, career and education advice, and more.

Janice is very likely to be able to see you right away! This drop-in service is available in the Flex Room from 11 am-2pm on Tuesdays, April 23, May 28, and June 25, 2024.

Community Integration Services Drop-In

Tuesday, May 28 | 11 am-2 pm

Drop in at the Bowen Island Library and get help from a Community Integration Specialist to access supports regarding housing, health, services, finances, and more. For example:

  • Assistance applying for income and disability assistance
  • Funding for urgent needs, such as food or clothing
  • Case management
  • Housing support referrals
  • Health support referrals

This drop-in service (as well as the WorkBC Career Advisor) is available in the Flex Room from 11 am-2pm on Tuesdays, April 23, May 28, and June 25, 2024.
