Beach Estates Park Open

Recently, a tree fell in Beach Estates Park, destroying a part of the walkway. Parks crews have been working quickly to make the neccesary repairs and are happy to report the park is now open.

Thank you for your patience during these repairs, we hope you enjoy being back in the park again soon!

BEACH ESTATES PARK INFO

Westwood Lake Improvements

Phase 1 is in full swing and includes many improvements to the park entrance:

  • enhanced natural green spaces
  • improved parking (moving some current spots to lessen environmental impact, using permeable and impermeable surfacing and adding more spots and four additional accessible parking stalls)
  • better parking lot circulation flow and safety features
  • planting of additional native trees and shrubs
  • integration of stormwater management areas and rain gardens to capture and filter rainwater
  • mobility improvements along Westwood Road for both pedestrians and cyclists.

Some fun facts about the project include:

  • Trees cut down for the project went to good use:
    • Twelve logs were donated to the Mid-Island Woodworkers Guild, which they will process for use by SD68’s woodworking programs
    • Two of the logs are being turned into benches
    • Six logs will be used as landscaping features
  • Stormwater is managed to have a positive environmental impact:
    • Permeable pavers in the middle of the parking lot help with water treatment
    • Two large rain gardens will treat stormwater
    • “Through style” catchbasins will help you see the stormwater as it enters the raingardens
  • In addition to all those neat things, you will experience a more user-friendly parking lot with easily accessible pedestrian features.

Work is expected to wrap in time for May long weekend. To learn more about this project, visit getinvolvednanaimo.ca.
