Congratulations to the Class of 2024!

This year we had three PhD graduates, congratulations to Dr. Michael Landry, Dr. Jody Dlouhy-Nelson and Dr. Camille Rousseau!

“Learning about how the award represents being a holistic learning, made receiving it that much more special,” says Siegmann. “I went into the teaching program with an open heart and open mind, and I feel like I took all the opportunities that I could to learn. I feel like that represents well, now as a teacher, because I can provide a lot for my students to learn.”

Maxwell Cameron Award, Erik Junker-Andersen

After working in emergency services as a paramedic and a 911 dispatcher, Junker-Andersen’s desire for more meaningful connections led him to teaching.

“I was seeing these situations that could have been avoided if the people involved had developed important life skills, like coping and problem-solving,” he says. “Working in education seemed like the perfect place to help young people establish these skills.”

Call for Proposals: Research Forum on Educator Wellbeing
October 24 - 25, Kelowna, BC

This forum is an opportunity for sharing research and practice about educator wellbeing in diverse contexts and from multiple approaches.

The goals of forum are to share findings and practices for educator wellbeing, establish connections, expand conversations, and build community for the work of fostering and sustaining wellbeing for educators in various education systems (e.g. early childhood education, Kindergarten to grade 12 and post-secondary).

We welcome presentations focused on educator wellbeing. The term ‘educator’ encompasses teachers, instructors, administrators, education assistants, counsellors, and others across and within educational contexts. Presentations and discussions will take place throughout the two days. You may wish to present individual work or work by/with a group of colleagues.

Together we can share diverse approaches to creating a positive school climate that supports the wellbeing of educators, while addressing academic, emotional, and social needs of students across a wide range of education levels and contexts. These presentations and discussions are a place for scholars, practitioners and interested educational community members to share the highlights of their research and work, creating space for dialogue and discussion to examine these ideas from multiple views and build further knowledge about how to support and grow educator wellbeing.

The deadline to submit your proposal is July 31, 2024.

Proposal decisions will be communicated by August 25, 2024.

Teaching Methods for the EAL Classroom: Scholar-Practitionership in Action

Explore the craft of teaching with an examination of approaches and techniques that promote multilingual students living well in a new place as they develop their English as an additional language skills and other accompanying knowledge. In particular, communicative and task-based language teaching and learning are revisited for practical insights and implementation, with a consideration of research, theory, and practice to embrace a philosophy that goes beyond a single language teaching method.

Conversation and questions are encouraged.

EDUC 534: Coyote Stories: Pedagogy and Praxis
Winter Term 1: September to December

This upcoming course taught by Dr. Bill Cohen examines how respective Indigenous traditional knowledge stories and storytelling practices inform organic theoretical frameworks, pedagogy, and praxis in place-based schooling, community, and peoples transforming projects.

Format: Hybrid (In-Person on Wednesdays)

Graduate Course

EDST 498D: Climate Justice and Education: Foundational Theory and Action
Winter Term 1: September to December

his course focuses on both theory and action for educators interested in engaging in climate action. Reading theories from Indigenous, Western, and other diverse cultural knowledge will cultivate new ideas. Student will engage in a hands-on restoration project in a campus grassland plot, putting theory into action. By the end, you’ll have a theoretical foundation and skills to engage in taking the initial steps into climate action.

Format: In-Person (Saturdays)

Post-Bacc Course

EPSE 470D: Autism Spectrum Disorders
Winter Term 2: January to April

This course explores Autism Spectrum Disorders from a lifespan perspective applying behavioural, social, and cognitive theories. Topics include diagnostic characteristics and the diagnostic process in British Columbia, the etiology, history, and co-morbid conditions associated with ASD. Special emphasis will be given to evidence-based interventions and support strategies within early intervention, school, and employment settings.
