We bid a fond farewell to the School's Student Engagement Officer, Elise Le Brun who leaves us on April 9th to take on the role of Manager, Student Engagement at Langara College. Elise joined UBC Kinesiology four years ago in a shared position with the Centre for Student Involvement and Careers and has grown KIN's Student Engagement portfolio by leaps and bounds. Riazi, Kelly Wunderlich, Madelaine Gierc, Mariana Brussoni, Sarah A. Moore, and Mark S. Tremblay. The COVID-19 outbreak and related public health guidelines have changed the daily lives of Canadians and restricted opportunities for healthy movement behaviours for children. The purpose of this study was to explore how parents experienced the pandemic-related restrictions and how they impacted their children’s movement behaviours. Read More | | | Sport BC Athlete of the Year Honours Dr. Patricia Vertinsky with 'In Her Footsteps, Celebrating BC Women in Sport' Award Congratulations to Patricia Vertinsky who, as part of Sport BC’s Athlete of the Year Awards, has been selected as one of the two 2020 Honourees to the In Her Footsteps, Celebrating BC Women in Sport recognition program. The award ceremony took place virtually on Thursday, March 25th, 2021. The School is proud of the important work Dr. Vertinsky has done to advance women and gender politics in the realm of sport and kinesiology. Dr. Vertinsky’s story will also be presented and profiled in the In Her Footsteps exhibit at the BC Sports Hall of Fame. Read More | | | | Moss Norman and Jan Hare Awarded Funding for their project, (Re)Imagining Indigenous-Centered UBC Campus Recreation Congratulations to Jan Hare and Moss Norman for being awarded a Campus as a Living Lab grant. The grant supports research projects on the Vancouver campus that uphold strategic sustainability priorities and embody the principles of a living lab. The project will address two UN Sustainable Development Goals, including ‘Good Health’ and ’Sustainable Cities and Communities.' It will respond to a call to action within UBC’s Indigenous Strategic Plan (ISP) with an over-arching objective to decolonize campus and advance and support Indigenous self-determination through socially and culturally sustainable campus recreation. Read More | | | Brian Wilson and CSS Team Awarded Grant to Establish Emerging Research Cluster: 'Mobilizing Sport & Sustainability Collective' Professor Brian Wilson, Director of the Centre for Sport and Sustainability and the CSS team were recently awarded a 2021/22 Grant for Catalyzing Research Clusters in the recent UBC GCRC competition. The GCRC program is designed to foster and support networks of researchers spanning multiple disciplines at UBC who form interdisciplinary teams that foster partnerships and collaborations, develop new research questions, address key societal and cultural problems and work together to solve challenges that transcend traditional boundaries. Read More | | | Sara Hodson BHK '02, Advocates to Abolish Gym Membership Taxes In March, Sara Hodson joined the Breakfast Television show to endorse the Fitness Industry Council of Canada's (FIC) proposal to the federal government to make gym memberships and services tax deductible. They discussed how exercise plays a vital role in the physical and mental health of Canadians, and that a tax deduction on fitness services will motivate Canadians to get the extra support they need for preventative care.
