Promoting biomass energy: A solution to empower rural women in Côte d'Ivoire

Around 75% of women in rural areas of the Côte d’Ivoire live below the poverty line, despite being heavily involved in the agricultural sector and a growing national economy. They also spend much of their time and income meeting the basic needs of their families. A team of local researchers found that electricity access improves household living conditions by increasing income sources and empowering women in rural areas. In particular, decentralized electrification through biomass power plants can provide practical, feasible, environmentally-friendly and cost-effective electrification for small and remote communities.
